"It took firefighters an hour to bring the fire under control."

Sounds quite serious then, glad everyone's OK.

I was on the train behind, and in fact the incident started about an hour earlier than that story says - we were stuck outside Surbiton between about 9:30 and 10:30 due to a 'fire on a train near Berrylands'. The line was then re-opened for a short while, during which time we stopped at Surbiton, and then just on the other side of Surbiton we stopped again, and the guard informed us that the fire had re-ignited and the fire brigade had been called.

We then sat there for about another hour and a half, most of which with no heating, before moving on at about 12:00.

Oh yes, another story here: http://www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/news/local/wimbledonnews/4839081.BREAKING_NEWS__Eye_witnesses_accounts_of_train_on_fire_at_Berrylands_station/

Train involved was the 0638 Portsmouth Harbour to Waterloo (headcode 1T22). Another driver in a passing train had reported the fire to the signaller. Just to top it off, another train in the line that formed had failed and needed to be assisted....

That will be because the third rail current would have been isolated, so the unit would have been running on batteries only. They only power basic systems, such as half the lights.

Another reason you were delayed so long was due to trespassers. It's unclear if this was due to passengers getting off one of the trains, but it meant that when the line was ready to reopen the power had to be taken off again whilst BTP dealt with the situation.

Hope they got the names of the idiots and take them to court, selfish "drink serving staff members"

So much for the smoking ban on SWT services then...Must remember my tobacco and matches next time I travel!

On a more serious note though; Am I right in assuming this would've been a 444? If so, it proves that the Disastero truly lives up to it's name...:roll:;)

Thus, my suspicions are confirmed...I got the stock family right, even if the type was six-off! :)

Is it me, or might the Germans still be trying to get one back at us following the result of the last war?
[And of course, he does suggest that whilst listening to Ramms+ein's Reise, Reise album!]

Except that as Siemens supplied the units on a build and maintain basis it might be just as much of a headache for them if these fires are a result of problems with the units.

I was under the impression that the "warranty" agreement has expired now and SWT must pay maintainance charges to Seimens (although they are tied to take it from them)

People who get off of a train which has been sitting there for a prolonged time are not idiots. They might have somewhere to be. They might have a dying family member they need to visit. Who knows?

I just know I would do the same thing.

People who decide to get off a train and walk up the tracks are idiots because they are putting themselves in danger, along with anybody else that decides to follows them, it would be interesting if one of these idiots lets themselves off the train and a child followed them and was electrocuted, who would be at fault.
When the problem was sorted there were further delays when the power had to be turned off again to remove these idiots causing further delays to sensible people who can wait patiently.

As for your dying relative line again , IF there was anyone on the train with a dying relative, did they tell the train crew this or is this your normal headline grabbing what could have, might have headline! Try sticking to FACTS or do you want to be a tabloid "journalist"

You only need to look back in fairly recent railway history to find out what happens when you bail out of a train without being escorted.

In 1995 an HST caught fire near Maidenhead when a fuel tank became detached from a power car and ignited.

Details below:

http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/docSummary.php?docID=401

http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/HSE_Maidenhead1995.pdf

And you Bengley have the bloody nerve to say you'd do the same, I'm just trying to work out whether you're stupid, idiotic, intellectually sub-prime or a combination of all three!

We all have places to go, work to do, but I don't intend to take the one way journey to the pearly gates any sooner than I have to.

To be fair, those pax that were killed probably didn't have the level of knowledge about the railways that someone on here might.

It still doesn't justify the crass stupidity of Bengley, who's more or less said it's perfectly acceptable to do it.

It's not, it's a criminal offence called Trespass, you could probably include reckless endangerment in there as well...

Well if there is a dying family member are you hoping to get a bulk discount on coffins by wandering around railway tracks aimlessly?

The most important word in your poszt Celia is MIGHT, still waiting for some-one to answer this-

it would be interesting if one of these idiots lets themselves off the train and a child followed them and was electrocuted, who would be at fault.

Very strong candidate for the most crass, idiotic and downright selfish moronic comment I've ever seen on here.
When things go wrong, leave it to the professionals - it's no help when people start whining on about "I have somewhere important to be/My mothers dying/My wife's about to give birth" - IT DOESN'T SPEED THINGS UP !!
I know it's frustrating but that's the way it is.I've been involved in many of these incidents and when the public decide to take things in hand, chaos ensues.Period.

@bengley: Sorry if this offends but that is so typical of todays Me, Me, Me society. Not a thought given at all to how such an action might affect others let alone the dangers it could put you, and the people who might have to rescue you, into.

MrC, that's typical of what this country's become selfish & that's why this country is in the mess it's in, selfishness & greed have dragged it down. Still that's another topic altogether & one that you'll need anti depressants for.

I believe it's 7 maybe more, 455's have suffered quite badly as well, that's why the Waterloo-Dorking service is cancelled entirely & Waterloo-Hampton Court service only runs between Surbiton & Hampton Court (that will only need a single unit) for tomorrow. (11/01/10)
