I've been a long time lurker on these forums, however never made an account as I never had any issues, until now.
Yesterday I was taking the train from a non ticketed station using TFW going to Pontypridd.
I usually make this trip once a week or so and I usually buy my ticket online and use my railcard for a discount.
However yesterday my phone had broke and I was left without a phone for the whole day, so instead of buying my ticket online, I just thought I'd buy it on the train as there are no ticket machines at my local station.
When I got on the train I waited for the guard to approach me, when he did I asked for a single ticket and showed him my railcard for my discount. I was then told that I couldn't use my railcard when buying on the train. I knew that this was wrong and confronted him by saying that I didn't have an earlier chance to buy a ticket, I therefore could use my railcard on the train.
He then went on to lecture me that I was wrong and the policy "must have changed recently"
Since I didn't have my phone on me I didn't feel coconfident in what I was saying as I couldn't read him the terms and conditions
Is what he was saying correct? I felt like such a fool at the time, I get anxious causing a scene so I just paid the full amount.
