Evenin' all.

Anyone out there got a copy of Platform Five's Summer 1988 Locos? Would a kind soul please tell me the numbers, names (official and unofficial too) and depot-allocations of the remaining class 45's in operation during early-1988.

My 1980's photos are in storage in another part of the UK - and I missed out buying a copy of that Platform Five book from The Bay, last week.

Thanks in advance.

All operational peaks were based at Tinsley by 1988 (Toton was entirely Coal sector by this time)
45007/012/037/041/046/052/103/106/107/110/113/115/128/141 being in main line service, 45022/029/034/040/066 were were departmental loco renumbered 97409 to 97412 respectively (I beileve for ECML electrification trains), also 45121 was a static generator at Derby Litchurch Lane.

AFAIK Tinsley, Toton and Cricklewood were the only depots to have 45s allocated in the 1980s.

Thanks 12'

I recall standing at Leicester station, June 1988, when a pair of 45/1's rolled in with a cross-country service. Can't recall any more details, though I have a few photos of 'em back in storage.

Martin Loader's excellent "Honda Wanderer" website has a shot of 45141 in mid-1988 and I'm trying to establish the numbers and names of the ones still in revenue service in the summer of '88.

According to the Ian Allan abc book for 1988 lists the 45/0s in either departmental or freight sectors. The 45/1s were in the parcels sector.

I have all my old combined volumes, yes - right back to when I started in 1979 ( IA until 1984; P5 from 1985 ).

And if, having said that, I now get swamped with listing requests, I will expect suitable donations to my JustGiving account in aid of the Mary Hare Schools...

Good stuff! I was a spotter until around 1984 - 85 but sadly my note books and spotter books were lost many years a go. I now rather regret that but hey ho! Heading down to the Côte d'Azur next week where i will be able to see some proper trains from the beach!

Peter's splendid list ties in very nicely with the info and photos, describing the Peaks' final months, which I found on the Derby Sulzers website.

Couple of things, Peter -

Your list mentions 45123 - was that a typo for 113, as I found several shots of the latter loco still working in the early summer of '88.

Does your list include the unofficial names given to the operational survivors? If so, what was 45052 named? I can't find details for that one.

Many thanks.

Yes, it's a typo that I missed - now corrected.

( For the record, in that year 45 123 is listed as one of the 63 withdrawn examples, location Toton. )

If you give me a day or two I should hopefully find my early editions of Traction magazine, one of which listed all the unofficial Tinsley names. Will post them here if I can find them.

Geordie back from exile.
[Nostalgia mode]

Cannot help but remember heading from Dawlish through the tunnels towards Teignmouth and seeing various loco numbers 'graffiti-ed' on the tunnel entrances. I forget them now but even more recently standing on the footbridge just west of Dawlish station, looking towards the first tunnel, I remember a few "Peaks" being immortalized alongside "Whistlers" and of course Duff's. I could not do anything but imagine the gricing that went on there with all these magnificent machines coming down from Up North on, I assume, cross-country services in the 70's and 80's. Almost brought a tear to my eye....

My nostalgia mode is always on, Flymo! :D

I was weaned on a diet of Midland Main Line Peaks (almost exclusively 45s). Annual visits to the grandparents, in South Devon, invariably meant being taken to watch the 'foreign' Peaks, as - if I remember correctly - the inter-regional services often had a 46 at the helm as far as Plymouth.

Happy days!
