Yes - for example the SR turned out 3-4 Pullmans for Derby Day for years.

But in the T and RS forum I think the Royal Train naturally refers to a specific set of vehicles (or possibly older versions - IIRC there were complete East Coast and West Coast trains pre WW2).

Fascinating. Thanks for that. What is a number one?

How come the Queen didn't carry on to Windsor by royal train?

Number One was a disciplinary issue. Could be a warning which went on your staff record, through to dismissal.

Regards Windsor, Both the Southern and Western Stations are Terminals. In the case of Central there was the access to the Branch at Slough and the fact that it's single line. This would have required special working arrangements. Riverside is a complicated Station to get to from the rest of the Network. Slough had bi-directional working into Platform 5 and is easily accessed from the rest of the Network both for the Royal Train and its ECS. These were the arrangements in the 70's and the Station layouts remain much the same today. Windsor Castle is only three miles from Slough Station by Road, and the local Police were well able to handle the security at Platform 5 and the Royal Car Transit. The Queen travels by car between Windsor and Buck House. (Saw her once in a car on the A4 just past Harrods on a busy Saturday afternoon, complete with Police escort).

Surely any train carrying the Queen is the royal train, in much the same way that any US Air Force plane conveying the POTUS is Air Force 1?

The Royal Train is a particular one-off set of carriages kept for the moment at Wolverton.

The Queen often travels in an ordinary service - that is not The Royal Train but a train with a Royal on it.

But is it not treated and signalled in the same way as the Royal Train (e.g. not held at red signals)?

Cheers for that explanation. Interesting.

Not sure where this urban myth started, but I have never heard
of it running as 1X01 - certainly not since privatisation.

A 1962 BR staff information booklet detailing the introduction of 4 character headcodes lists trains running under GROVE (Royal train) were allocated the headcode 1X01.

The royal train can convey other senior members of the royal family with or without the queen on it and still be treated as the royal train, so in that respect its not the same.

The Royal Train is just the name given to the coaches, it runs by another name, or at least it does down our way.

What name would that be, or should I ask!!

Slough was the 1st royal station, a large station in its own right, as Windsor Central is rather difficult for the royal to use now, slough makes it easier, as does Riverside station, someone on here will know when riverside/central or slough was last used for royal jobs.

It looks shiny to me! Can tell you're an SWT man, some other TOCs are happy as long as you can see through most of the windows!

this window you speak of? Trains have them? I assumed the world was mostly an off gray browny haze - Well unless the queen is aboard ;)

I wonder if the FCC first class compartment she uses is spruced up prior to her arrival?

First ever Royal Train left Slough Station in 1842.

Also Slough Station is famous for the first murderer to be arrested by the use of the Telegraph.

Also not forgetting "Station Jim".
