From here, it's an 8 minute/0.4 mile walk to Bicester Town Railway station. We have forgotten that it's closed, so instead of a train we board the Chiltern Rail Replacement Bus Service at 17:35. It deposits us at (the also closed for rebuilding) Islip station at 17:53 on Saturday afternoon.

We wander around aimlessly for an hour before returning to board the 1853 Chiltern Railways Replacement Bus Service to Oxford, arriving 1918 on Saturday evening.

We've explored London and the south for a while now, so making our way up north, we board the 1940 CrossCountry service 1E73 to Leeds, arriving there at 2325 on Saturday evening.

We have just enough time to take 1P66, the 2337 First TransPennine Express service to York, arriving 0003 on Sunday morning.

There does not appear to a wide range of buses at this hour in York, with most services finishing by 2330, so we have no choice but to let the hours pass, before boarding the 0230 First TransPennine Express service 1P03 to Manchester Piccadilly, arriving there at 0349 in the early hours of Sunday morning.

We could just continue going back and forth on 24 hour TransPennine services between Manchester and Leeds but I don't see much point in that, as it is repetitive and none of the other rail services start until about 0900, so we sample the local buses as we board the 0700 First in Calderdale & Huddersfield service 185 to Slaithwaite (Star Hotel), arriving there at 0719 on Sunday morning.

There's not a lot happening in Slaithwaite at this time on a Sunday morning and we're still a bit early for the first trains and trans-Pennine buses of the day, so .....

We board the 0744 First in Calderdale & Huddersfield service 185 (giving a nod to the same driver who dropped us off less than half-an-hour ago) and ride to Huddersfield Bus Station, arriving at 0806 Sunday morning.

Is this different though as it is a big one and the line is closed for ages.

My interpretation of the spirit of the quiz rules is that normally we do not take into account short-term engineering works, like line closures or replacement buses, which last only for one or two weekends and we should refer to normal timetables for these kind of occasions.

The line closures, service changes and replacement buses for the Preston - Bolton - Manchester electrification are major, longer-term 7-day-a-week events (scheduled to last at least until October), for which the TOCs have gone to the trouble of publicising & printing special timetables.

I propose in this particular case (as well as the temporary Metrolink closures at St Peter's Square in Manchester City Centre) we do treat these as special situations which are not transient or short-term, and work to the published temporary timetables, including any replacement buses where these are part of the service pattern.

Keeping on the move, we board the 1431 Northern train from Leyland to St Helens Central, arriving at 1503 Sunday afternoon.

We don't take into account replacement buses, we go on the normal working timetable.

Is this different though as it is a big one and the line is closed for ages.

These are indeed long term changes - I can't actually find any obvious timetable for what would be running if the work wasn't being done. I agree this move is completely fine, even if it temporarily confused us all.

Carry on. :D

Walking up the station approach incline to the bus stop on the other side of Finney Lane outside the telephone exchange, we board the 1830 Stagecoach Manchester service 369 to Adswood (Bird Hall Lane/Fleming Works) that arrives there at 1843 on Sunday evening.

I assume you mean Fielding Works?

We alight to find that the 369 is the only bus stopping here. Instead of simply waiting for the next 369, we walk 0.4 miles (8 minutes) back to the stop at Edgeley Road/Bordon Road where we catch the 19:04 Stagecoach Manchester service 11 to Altrincham Interchange, arriving at 19:55 on Sunday evening.

We continue on Manchester Community Transport service 22 at 2120. Inspired by the cathedralesque architecture of the Trafford Centre and still feeling religious, we alight at Moses Gate at 2200 Sunday evening.
