It's an odd island of niceness (though I'm led to believe the hotel is rubbish) in an absolute and utter dive.

Coventry and Stafford are classics from a more recent era if that makes any sense.
York, a favourite station of mine, seems rather large to me to fall into the OP's criteria.Doncaster seems to have a charm about not, the booking hall is massive & quite airy.
York still has character plus a decent couple of pubs.
Lincoln, would that count?
It's a lovely station, but "medium sized"? Two short platforms and their moderate buildings only.Bradford on Avon is a pleasant medium sized station. It has original station buildings (that are in use) made from bathstone, and canopies, a footbridge and gardens.
