i've just been reading through the latest copy of RAIL and noticed that the depot is to be demolished to make way for reclamation and redevelopment, does anyone know if this means the whole marshalling yard is getting ripped up or just a section of it. I suspect the land will get made into cheap housing or student accommodation as tees-side uni is just over the way.

The marshalling yard is still frequently used for stabling and staging freight trains, so I’d imagine that only the oval shaped area occupied by the depot itself will be getting redeveloped. The depot takes up a sizeable area compared to the marshalling yard: Though it will be an interesting site to develop: The yard on one side and running lines on the other: Hemmed in by railways.

It’s very sad to hear that Thornaby TMD is going to disappear forever, yet another of the north east’s well known railway locations gone, just like Gateshead depot on Tyneside did about ten years ago, swept away in the wake of development.

No idea why anyone would want to build housing on the depot, in the middle of a marshalling yard with the A19 close by and surrounded by a massive industrial estate. Probably either be a car park or more industrial units.

Indeed, that's what I was thinking, no one in their right mind would want to live in that spot!

Far more likely it will be industrial units, hopefully with a direct rail link!

One obvious group that would - spotters. Have a massive colony of them there. I'm sure if they built a hotel it would never be empty as well.

I reckon it'll be an addition to Teesside Park, just over the bridge. And the A19 is quite far from Thornaby TMD to be honest, but the A66 runs parallel. But trees in between them both, and the A19 is on the flyover at that point.

I heard a little while ago that the site was "earmarked for a retail and entertainment complex" after demolition of the depot, not sure if that's still the plan.

Like others have said above, surely they aren't going to build flats or housing on the site, it's not exactly going to be a sought after location, you would end up with a rail enthusiast community living there!

I take your point about the trees beeing between the A66 and the site, although trees are not that great for noise reduction. Plus since the A19 is on the flyover, it would be very hard to cancel out the noise it creates.

As you say it will probably be more industrial/retails units.

That would take a lot of effort, and would probably be very costly. If it was through some sort of S106 agreement then it may happen but I don't see the point. If it is going to be some sort of industrial estate then the current access is fine IMO.

I have also heard that part of the plan might involve moving the main lines to where the freight through lines are (ie, to the north of the depot), as access to the depot is via a low underbridge...

If I remember rightly that was where the main line originally went but when the yard (Erimus Yard as it was known) was built the main line was diverted round the side of it.
