If I am travelling from A to C and have to change trains at B, will the ticket barriers allow me to exit/re-enter so I can use the facilities of the general station while waiting ?

Whatever the answer is, does it apply for all types of ticket, 'Advance', 'Off peak Saver' and ' Anytime' ?

I hope the answer is "Yes" to both parts but I am uncertain that it will be. The barriers may think that I am breaking a journey when I am not.

Depends on the station. They should do. If they don't, the manual gate operators should let you through. You shouldn't have a problem.

As long as its not ATW who's exiting ticket barriers seem to enjoy eating any type of ticket :P
Though if you have two tickets, it wouldn't matter anyway.

Some ticket barriers beep at you if the ticket doesn't have "B" written on it
Some will just eat everything as they assume you're leaving the station and don't need it
And some work properly.

If in any doubt, just ask the gate staff to let you through, showing them that your ticket is valid

Well, the ticket barriers at Edinburgh Waverley have never let me through for a journey starting or ending in Newcastle, regardless of what ticket type I was carrying.

(For those who don't know, only the west facing bay platforms at Waverley are barriered, and it's necessary to pass through the barriers if you're changing from/to a train on one of the other platforms.)

I'm not sure what tickets are supposed to open those barriers to be honest, as ever since they were installed I've always had to go through the manual gates, which is inconvenient if there's a queue. I very much doubt they recognise break of journey restrictions or anything along those lines. I've had the same problem when exiting Glasgow Queen St. in order to catch a connecting train from Central.

I've mentioned this before, but the barriers at Temple Meads have accepted a break of journey I've made, although I've never had it happen anywhere else.

In that situation I normally show my ticket to the gateline staff coming out and have never had a problem. I'm scared of putting it through the barriers going out incase it eats it. I'll put it through the barriers going back to the platforms though.

I've had problems at Reading- only wanted to go out and use the cashpoint. Ticket wouldn't work in the gates, showed it to the gateline operator who said once I'd exited I wouldn't be allowed back in again.

IME they recognise only recognise break-of-journeys for which they have been programmed, which usually means local commuter routes only.

Even if the gate lets you out it might not let you back in, if you try to enter within the time delay which prevents the ticket being used twice.

Oh no sounds like algebra. I am useless at it

I've a hunch that you can still escape the barriers by walking to the extremity of the southernmost platform and going round the fence to the adjacent (un-barrier-ed) through platform. But you will look like a rather obvious fare dodger.

Ticket barriers are, in general, a nuisance when they eat your ticket at the end of your journey. I sometimes need long distance train tickets to reclaim travel expenses so always divert to the manned gate at a terminating station.

What ticket did you have? They can't deny you access to station facilities on any ticket. If it was to Reading Stations and you want to go to Reading West the barrier would keep the ticket but you should be able to pass through manually.

It was London Terminals to Crowthorne anytime day return. Valid via any reasonable route, ie not the "Not Reading" cheaper variety that's valid from Waterloo via Wokingham. I suspect it may have been an error on the part of a junior gateline supervisor

You should remember to ask for a receipt, which is surely quicker for you as you can then use any gate to exit?

Interested to see how an automated gating system deal with towns still lucky enough to have 2 stations or more as they are now being installed at Newark Northgate as they will have to pass any tickets for stations on Midland line from Castle station.
For example both Collingham & Rolleston as same pricing group as Northgate but would have to allow passenger to pass through & retain ticket possible for future reuse if a return portion so to my devious mind thats opens the possibility to 2 trips for price of 1 at least once through automated barrier second trip through manned gate if ticket is not maually checked on board.

Yes, but receipts issued on Avantix and S&B TVMs (don't know about others) only show the amount paid, not what ticket was purchased. Some (many?) employers will want to see the ticket to make sure they aren't paying for a first class instead of a steerage.
