Is GA mostly DOO except loco hauled and ex regional railways... Is this historical? Were WAGN and FGE DOO?

These private companies must love running a mostly DOO franchise...

Yes, mostly. They were converted to Driver Only Operation use many years ago, during Network SouthEast days.

From previous threads:-

GEML is all DOO from Colchester to London except Norwich London intercity trains. Clacton, Sudbury, harwich and Braintree branches all have guards on them. Guards also work to Ipswich and Colchester town Trains depending on train length due to positioning of DOO equipment..

West Anglia is completly DOO.

The peak 12-car Southminster trains also have guards on board.

the gaurds start or end their journey at wickford on the through services
for example the 17:06 abellio greater anglia southminster to london liverpool street service has a gaurd onboard on arrival at wickford the gaurd will then leave the train where it continues to london driver only operated

I think Braintree only has guards for 12 car's as they hang off the end of the platform at Freeport

They must lose a fair amount of revenue with so many DOO services. Do they staff stations from start till finish with barriers? Unlikely I'd thought.

If they are unbarriered most of the time then TfL taking over most shorter distance services around London with Overground and Crossrail should see a big jump in revenue. TfL know there is much revenue to be gained if you actually have barriers and make people pay and thus why they are willing to take on revenue risk. The same would happen with southeastern. Does make it silly though they are cutting staff on the underground to single staff members at some stations, so no barriers and more people won't pay.

Any guards on GA don't check tickets. That's done by RPI on trains.

Pretty sure guards check tickets on Norwich - liv St, and all Norwich local routes (Cambridge/Lowestoft/Yarmouth etc)

Why would private companies love running a mostly DOO franchise? There is no difference to them whether DfT specify every train is DOO or each passenger has to have their own personal attendant. They all bid against the same service specification. If operating a DOO service is cheaper then taxpayers benefit.

They lose a fair bit from passengers going to Cambridge due to the gates and trains being DOO

Also between Littleport and Ely I suspect there are several taking advantage of trains being DOO, from getting on at Littleport several youths I notice every night I travel dont use the machine and their body language on the platform and on the train makes my suspicions stronger, sitting on the edge of the seat looking up and down the train ready to run in the toilet, others nervously standing up at the back of the train near the doors looking to see if anyone is coming down the train inspecting tickets

I remember a few late night FCC trains with onboard checks and kids jumping off at Hatfield to run up the train, having rushed down to avoid being checked.

Fortunately the RPIs often saw this and went back for them. Not always mind, so it was usually better to start checks from each end and meet in the middle.

I expect that if the trains had a guard checking tickets, the trick would work better than when there are two or more RPIs.

Not when the guard is the first person on to the platform and the last one off at every station (if they're doing the doors), it makes it pretty obvious to see where people are hiding from you.
