Additionally, 60096 is stored at BZ.

Does anyone know if its stored servicable? Looking at there only being 3 locos west of Dawlish, it'd be unfortunate if Network Rail find a stone supplier that side of the blockage!

Are there any Voyagers in the Exeter area? Of course also trapped due to the Whiteball tunnel works.

The 153s had been stabled at Teignmouth since it all kicked off.

That wouldnt be the phrase I would use for them, abandoned or marooned would be more appropriate! ;)

Of course, I have been told XC did route learn that for the Whiteball blockage but never used it...

No they didnt, any XC trains would be piloted by an FGW Exeter crew, normally only a driver as the trains run ECS.

It was tight enough with current paths between FGW units and HSTs, let alone diverting the XCs down the Castle Cary single line section and then indeed past Yeovil.

XC only had a path at night from what I have seen.

The signalling is controlled from Exeter PSB. Cables run from there, along the length of the route as far as Paignton and Totnes, where control changes to Plymouth PSB. This includes point work as well. The storm took out the cabling.

When it gets repaired is anyone's guess

I think if you look in the earliest pictures of the exposed track hanging in mid-air at Dawlish (e.g. on BBC news online), you can see the cabling dangling beside the track. Probably gone now they've started cutting the track.

From here

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laira_Traction_Maintenance_Depot

It states that as recent as 2007 Laira had allocation of 150s and 153s, so yeah no problem at all in maintaining them again

No. They didn't. The 150s were PM and the 153s EX. There has been no allocation since pre-privatistion days. Wilkipedia is only as good as the info which is supplied to it.

153361+153370 working 2Z73 have failed. Back to buses apparently.
Up and running again today. Assume Exeter fiters would have travelled down to "fix".

On the BBC News tonight they briefly show a FGW HST Power car with the coupler exposed and what looks like a shunter in the background, anyone know what's going on? I was guessing it might be being loaded onto a low loader?

Looks like it is being put on a low loader - you can see what looks like a cable towing it towards the trailer (unless my eyes were playing tricks!).

Looks like it's just being shunted around the depot to me, presumably a daily occurance at Laira.

Sorry for poor quality but had to take photo of the tv! Looking at it again I'd def say it's being towed by cable (the power car is creeping towards the left and the shunter moves off to the right!) onto what looks like a low loader - it's def a very steep piece of track whatever it is!!

There will be plenty of these moves in the coming weeks no doubt, in order to carry out exams

Can Laira not do this?

Serviceable power cars after an exam will get loaded onto a Low loader and transported to SPM.

Then at SPM, a powercar which is due at D, E or F exam will get loaded back on and taken to Laira by Road.

Ah I see, the other way round, power cars brought *to* Laira for exams by road :)

Laira staff have been stopping in London to carry out big exams on trailers at Old Oak Common and Old Oak and Landore are both looking at a 50% increase in A exams to keep the HST fleet going.

The 2x153s on the Paignton Branch shuttle have been changed over with another pair from Laira obviously due to fuel capacity

On the A38 and M5 yesterday I saw two HS125 coaches being moved by heavy haulage. I guess that's part of rescuing the trapped rolling stock. I was surprised how few trains were in Laira sidings, looks like a lot has already been moved north by road.

Where are they moving them to?

i cannot believe that First will be dragging rolling stock to and from Laira to bristol for exams...As laira has full vehcile lift faciilties should be able to cope with all the exams that the cut off fleets need...it will be fiscally cheaper to transfer consumables by road from bristol, arriva and FGW will be able off cost exam costs etc to each other, fuel can be brought in from plymouth itself anyway...
it would be churlish not to assume that Laira has the full Exams for the sprinter, railbus, voyagers etc....

the only stuff going by road should be stock going for major overhaul...cyclic exams, power unit changes etc are and should be childs play for the laira lads
