Folks,
There is a little village near me called Glenboig. It's fairly populated and has a main railwayline that runs through it,Glasgow to Cumbernauld line. The nearest Station to this Village is Coatbridge Sunnyside, which is about 3 miles from this village.l was wondering that if the villagers within this area made noises about the possibilty of a station being constructed to serve them what would there chances be from NR,bearing in mind there is a line already there.Does any other members in the forum know of any other places that could have a new station created to serve the residents.

Saltford (which I started a thread on a few months ago, to no interest whatsoever). BANES council wish for bidders for the new Greater Western franchise to include its reopening as part of their respective bids. It has a population of roughly 4,500 and would be the closest station to my University. (And before anyone says I'm being biased because of this, this fact is considered a major factor.)

In fact, four weeks ago a petition was handed in to Westminster calling for its reopening (source)!

Oh, and while you're at it, reopen St Anne's Park in Bristol as well.

Porton, which used to have a station, would probably be a good one now that the science lab is there. Some people suggested it but Network Rail said it would cost too much and mess up timetables, which is a shame. Perhaps if it gets a little bigger they would reconsider.

There is a widespread and general issue which applies to very many communities and which arises from this question.

There are hundreds of villages already well connected to the rail network, but which are not served by the network. Almost all of these communities are on long-distance high-speed lines and as a consequence, have had their stations closed so that the density of long distance travel can continue to run achieving impressive end to end timings.

On my regular route, the East Coast main line, we have stations in villages where it is four-tracked such as Knebworth and Arlesy (though no longer at Essendine which could have flourished it it had been retained), and no stops at all on some of the dualled sections such as the entire region of the Scottish Borders, where communities linking into Reston, Grantshouses or East Linton could benefit from local services if only those services could be accommodated into the long-distance high-speed pattern.

Our probelm is how to manage the conflicting demands of long-distance high-speed passenger services, local passenger services and freight services, each of which have their own quite different demands on the infrastructure, all of which are expected to develop and grow, but all sharing that same infrastructure.

What we need are local trains which can accelerate very quickly and reach 125 mph to not get in the way of everything else. I know this sounds terribly naive but it’s worked on HS1.

Helpringham[Lincolnshire] is on the Joint Line [Lincoln-Sleaford to Spalding and Peterborough].

It used to have a station until the 1960s, and could be a possible contender for re-opening. It has a population of some 700 people, and is approx. 7 miles from Sleaford. There are 4 buses per day into Sleaford from there.

The present service is worked mainly by 153s, and as I think there is a 55mph speed limit on the double-tracked line, and at best an hourly service with little or no freight at present, calls at a reopened station could easily be made.

If the money, and the will, was available.

On my regular route, the East Coast main line...

I'm sure we've had a thread like this before. On the same line: Tuxford, Bawtry, Rossington. But the bus services are OK, so would it be worth spending a fortune building new stations and passing loops so the pathing on the main line isn't disrupted? Probably not.

140mph and there aren't THAT many other trains on the route...

26 Trains per DAY to slot between on HS2 for the SE Javelin services...

There aren't any local stations either Ebbsfleet - where a lot of Eurostar call and then Ashford on different platforms to them. HS1 can't be a comparison to the main radiating lines out of London. ....from Paddington the likes of Wantage Road, Euston - Weedon, St.Pancras- Kibworth ... intermediate halts on the mainline that would hold up long distance traffic and are hence closed. HS1 has no intermediate halts.

Well you know what BANES stands for Ivo, and so do I - but how many others on here do ?

Crewe - Shrewsbbury reopened / new stations at Willaston , Tilstock, Hadnall, Farlescott / Ditherington (one or the other, not both)

Bath and North East Somerset?

As for villages that could do with a station, I give you Copmanthorpe. Is all.

Bath and North East Somerset?

Well, at least it's not just the two of us

On a more serious point though, I note that our SU President, who to be frank is rather incompetent on transport matters (as readers of the First S&A Discussion thread will know), wrote a letter in support of the petition. Having read said letter, I fail to see why he bothered; it adds very little to the petition and worse still doesn't even have the right date! It says "29/02/212", i.e. 1,800 years in the past...

Still, at least he listens to me. I just have to hope the girl coming in next month does the same.

For me, I support the Saltford station just because I think it would increase the viability of a more regular Bath - Bristol stopping service. Currently services that stop at Keynsham and Oldfield Park are quite rare when you consider how frequent the Bath - Bristol services are. Although I do question its usefulness for Bath Spa students (surely it would be easier and quicker to get the train to Bath Spa and then get the bus to the campus? - although they could run a shuttle bus from the station to the campus I suppose).

That would be Stratford & Ebbsfleet , Aren't they there for the Eurostar and incidental for the Javelin?

Just seen Mutant Lemming's post ... same answer.

The idea is to run a shuttle bus as you suggest.

But if a shuttle bus between the two main campuses, via the lesser campuses at Dartmouth Avenue and Culverhay School and the external Halls of Residence, failed spectacularly I fail to see why this wouldn't do the same! They would be much better off introducing a through ticket valid on the 337/X39 and SPA1 to Bristol and encouraging travel that way. Which would then weaken the case for Saltford...

Yes but only 140 mph because everything else is 186 mph. But if you had a local train that was quick off the blocks between Kings Cross and Peterborough more stations could potentially be opened.

Well it will only work if the frequency is enough.
Even living right by Oldfield Park station now, it can sometimes be quicker to get the train to Bath Spa and get a bus from town, simply because the services stopping at Oldfield Park are so limited.

More seriously Low Moor, Wyke or Laisterdyke, all near Bradford.

Abingdon, Thamesmead?

Tuxford. On the ECML with a connection to the robin hood line and the A1 if the RHL extension goes forward then it could be itneresting to see a station at tuxford, maybe some intercity-ish stock running direct from Nottingham to the north (leeds or york or newcastle?) Although I think a spur would be needed..

Maltby, Tickhill - South Yorkshire

I don't think this is practical.

Tickhill's old station is on the A60 a mile north of the village; a potential new station is well to the west of the village; not sure about Maltby but the track certainly goes to the pit (yes, there is still one open in Britain) which is almost a mile east of the town centre. In any case, most people from Maltby head to Rotherham for their extra shopping rather than Doncaster.

Both these places have a half-hourly bus service to Doncaster (hourly from Maltby Sats), and from observation they are not exactly full.

Added to the problem is the pathing on single-line sections with coal trains.

Shame, but this would be well down the list.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

Sorry to be raining on parades tonight, but its population is only 2500. Yes there are a few settlements around but they could use Newark and Retford.

St Clears seems to be the best case presented so far - but how far would the station be from the village, is the bus service adequate anyway, I don't know.

Ilkeston is a town, but which line is it on? Sorry, just about to go to bed so too tired to look up google maps.

It apparently has a population of 1,500, and as you say is just 3 miles from the nearest station. Therefore, I think your chances of getting a station are approximately zero.
