What is happening at Leyland right now?

I've passed on a TPE about 20 minutes ago, a Class 180 Northern Rail Adelante on the platform 2 at Leyland. Doors are open, and firefighters are on the platform if I am not mistaken, I saw two.

Can anyone shed light?

One train at BPN is showing as arriving late due to a broken down train (although can't tell if this is the one you saw). Hopefully someone with Northern will be able to say.

Neither the Lancashire Evening Post nor the Lancashire Evening Telegraph have anything. Live departure board shows no delays. I don't think the only reported disruption on Northern Rail is related.

If it's the same Northern 180 I saw coming into Man Vic on Monday, I wouldn't be surprised if something had happened to it. I have never heard a train with such noisy brakes like that thing had. I'm no engineer, but the noise that they made was not normal.
On the subject of Northern stock, I have seen a 150 and a 142 smoking qquite heavily today. Even a couple of the drivers when changing at Wallgate stopped and had a look and a laugh at it.

Not be like the 158 at York at the back end of last year, was powering up after a shut down and started to smoke badly - so much so that the BTP standing on the footbridge were about to call for the fire brigade. Sod's law that I happened to be waiting for that 158 to go to Blackpool.

Alstom trains are known for having squealing brakes, the 175s do it as well. Think it's because the regenerative brake has been isolated.

No its perfectly normal I'm afraid. They used to have hydrodynamic brakes, but they now run disabled and use normal air/disc brakes, which are horribly squeaky and cost a few grand a shot and are frequently replaced.

Really? What a shame they treat the 180 like that. It's an amazing looking train, I must admit.

lol Northern units seem to like leaking oil for some reason. Probably what happened to those two units I saw today then

That will have been the Auxiliary heater kicking out smoke - quite a regular thing.

The Hydro-dynamic brake was isolated many years ago long before Northern got their hands on them. The HD brake was one of the sources of the fires that soon gave the 180s their reputation for being combustible.

Yeah, thinking about it now the smoke wasn't coming from the engine area. It was more to the front of the unit

That's where the auxiliary heater is. It's diesel fed and tops up the heating (regardless of whether the heating is actually working or not!)

hahaha I've been quite uncomfortable on a couple of trains these past few days due to a heater within the carriage blasting out hot air in my direction. When it was freezing cold a couple of months ago, not once did I experience hot air being blasted out like that. Seems they only work in mild weather

Oil leaking onto hot pipes caused a "bit of smoke" so hence firefighters
