In terms of comfort, I've not come across a modern DMU on which I can sit for four hours without noticing like a 159. Just so very comfy.

Class 171, just as well really as I spent 10 hours a week on them!

Of the ones I've used on my travels this year, the 185's and 175's were a damn revelation when compared to the 143's and 150's down here. One day they shall be ours, I tells ya!

156's or 158's. Both very comfortable for the longer distances.

142 pacers!. Massively undervalued, they still do a good job for a lot of the country whilst we are still desperate for traction.

Better than the people parry mover at Stourbridge anyway!

Also I do like the 168's, chiltern have a nice clubman unit there!

I liked the 175 when I first went on it, though the last few times was a bit less impressed, maybe the just needed a bit of a tidy, could say the same about the 180's.

Hated 158's at first, but the northern ones now are really quite nice, good engine sound too.

Don't mind the 185's either, though recently they seem to be having lots of problems with the toilets, and the 170's are quite nice.

For me, First generation would be Class 104 dmu & Class 119 & 120 Cross Country units. Modern stuff 175,185, never travelled on a 159 but looking in from the outside at Exeter St David's they do look very nice.

Swindon 120's though the regular type for me was a Derby built 114. Them aside you cant beat a Thumper!

As for newer types the 180's give a reasonable ride as does a 222... Yet 220 / 221 do not have the same appeal. The ex-MML 170's had poor legroom and other variants of the class were much better.

They are indeed nice and comfy. One of my colleagues commutes into Exeter from Axminster, and shockingly is fresh as a daisy compared to me and the wonders of the Pacerverse  Only thing that needs improving on 'em is some charge points and wifi, but those are minor things on the whole.

Not been on a 165/6 yet, but I assume they are pretty similar to the 150 family, seating wise. They'll be here....eeevvveeeennnntuallllly......

At least you have some wonderful views through the windows of your FGW Pacers in contrast to our scenic delights of Stockport, Bolton, Manchester etc.;)

SWT class 158, best DMU design, combined with lovely comfortable seating.

Past: the 110 'Calder Valley' units were great- such a shame they were supplanted by the 141s of all things... Though for nostalgic reasons I rather like those, too...

These days it's a toss-up between TPE 170s or the better examples of Northern's 158s.

BR era (2nd generation) Class 158/159

Post BR era - Class 175

101 for the Heritage line and 175 for the modern day.
