Paying dividends doesn't avoid tax. Corporation tax is paid on the profits and then personal dividend tax is paid by the recipient. All perfectly legal, by the way!
It avoids tax in the sense that the total tax take is lower than if the amount was paid as salary.

I would be surprised if Johnson goes quickly: I would expect him to try and hang on. He might succeed or he might not but he will just try to keep going: staying in Number 10 seems to be more important than dignity? The one wild card is Carrie, who might realise before hm if he is on a hiding to nothing.

Two more days and he passes Neville Chamberlain, thirty to reach May’s total. Does that matter to him?
He's surrounded himself with sycophants there is no one there now other than maybe Wallace in the cabinet who will tell him as it is hence he won't be going anywhere.

I know it's not illegal. Rather than saying "avoid tax" maybe I should have said "less tax than those on PAYE" .

Presumably Gromit has already resigned as he doesn’t get on with Big Dogs

Andrew Murrison is the MP for the Warminster/Trowbridge/Westbury area (South Wilts) which is an extremely safe Tory seat and he has consistently voted in line with the government through thick and thin, as he’s basically untouchable. I reckon there might be more symbolic importance to him quitting than is immediately apparent?

That's scraping the barrel in a search for new names to bring forth.
In case you've missed it, the Chancellor and the Secretary of State for Health have resigned this afternoon. I note you haven't commented on that. Are they major enough names for you?

Probably. The quality of photo he took of his letter does leave some scope for confusion
 The updated photo is much better - https://twitter.com/AWMurrison/status/1544385269138350081

Prime Minister's questions tomorrow should be "...interesting...." to say the least.

If that is Boris Johnson hasn't resigned by then.

I remember when Mrs Thatcher resigned.

She won the first round of the Conservative leadership contest, but not by a sufficient margin to avoid a second round. She initially vowed to fight on, but resigned the next day after thinking about it overnight and taking advice from cabinet colleagues.

Boris Johnson may well be in the same position - there is simply no way you can put a positive spin on this, and he will be very well aware that Sunak and Javid will be sharpening their knives and waiting for the moment to strike.

In other words, is it better to jump before you are pushed.

And that is without considering whether the infamous "..men in grey suits..." in the Conservative Party come and tell Boris Johnson that his time is up.

I honestly can’t see him resigning. Boris will need to be removed rather than jump himself if the party want him gone.

He may not resign willingly, but if someone like Sir Graham Brady, or the remaining senior members of his cabinet, tell him that his time is up he may decide that it is better to jump before he is pushed.

This is what happened with Mrs Thatcher.

Loads of useless candidates already being talked about for Cabinet and PM roles. My vote for PM would be Sir Roger Gale. He speaks far more sense than most Tories, and speaks up for their core principles - which the present shower simply don't. It's just a shame he's too old to cultivate a better political career for himself, and sad that the Tories have invested so heavily in Boris and his sycophants, rather than people like Sir Roger.

Unless the Tories fast track a leadership contest (like May's uncontested one), those tenures will be surpassed, as I can see Johnson being able to remain PM until a contest is complete. The contest that saw Johnson become PM lasted longer than a month.

He’s supposed to be up in front of the liaison committee tomorrow. That’ll be interesting, assuming he doesn’t phone in sick

That's because as a salary the business owner would pay BOTH employee and employer NIC, whereas as a sole trader, they'd only pay one lot of NIC, and of course if employed, the employer would pay the employers NIC. There's not much difference these days compared with trading as a sole trader as the personal dividend tax approximates to the sole trader NIC. It's because limited company owners have to pay BOTH employers and employees NIC that causes the problem, i.e. paying it twice.

The best MP to replace Johnson when he finally departs will be one who has had little to do with the current cabinet, even if it's not a household name.

The sooner Johnson goes the better.

I think you may find the Boris Johnson resigns before PMQ's tomorrow.

I don't see how he can face the House of Commons and try to pretend that everything is OK.
