Where do trains go on Christmas day?

I don't mean running obviously, but as there wouldn't be enough storage roads in the depots for all the rolling stock allocated to them, where do the other trains go? Do they sit in stations? I noticed there is some hoses at coach length intervals between platforms 9 and 10 at York, maybe this is the case at other stations too but I haven't noticed before.

Either way, I'm guessing a lot of ECS moves on the 27th to get things going again??

There is storage space for every coach somewhere.! Not only are all depots filled up but stock is stored in stations where they are authorised to be allowed to be berthed. For example at my local station (Tonbridge) stock is permitted to be berthed in platforms 1,2 and 4 but not in platform 3.
It is the job of the timetable planners to start up the service on the 27th by using the minimum number of ECS moves

Presumably they mainly go the same places they go any other night- only the stock used on the small number of 24hr services needs additional berthing

Thameslink normally had an overnight service on regular nights so on Christmas Day they needed more space than usual to put the units. IIRC, they sent four units to Moorgate, four to Luton (though it may only have been two, my memory is a little fuzzy on that one) and put three or four in the wash at Bedford. Ofcourse FCC now have Cauldwell Walk and more units to stable, but no longer have Moorgate, but I imagine they do something similar still.

Some TOCs usually park their trains up in unsecure locations over Christmas that are within easy reach of graffiti vandals.

Depends totally on what engineering works requirements that are required by network rail. Normally there is enough space at depots to store most rolling stock in the sidings, but a lot is stored in platforms at major stations where there is a depot signing on point for drivers and guards and access to the platforms can be secured. But sometimes NR will require some platforms to be vacant for engineering works etc.

Sodor

There have been strange goings-on in recent years on Sodor

I would have thought you would know that the Fat Controller has authorised Network Rail (Sodor Division) to take a full line possession for the whole of Sodor from 2300hrs on the 24th to 0100hrs on the 27th of December.

Yvonne the Yellow Engine will be making minute calculations about the ballast consistency in the Skarloey Mainline area.

Will Fred & Freda the Shed & his new GB Engineering partner Brian the bodysnatcher be there too? Along with the Network Rail (Sodor Division) Troublesome Trucks?

No. They have been dispatched to clear up the immense mess left behind when Wayne the Warm Engine (a Class 70) exploded on the Down Main at Crovan's Gate. The area has been subject to a Thin Controller's Speed Restriction (TCSR) since the incident, and Christmas is the perfect time for delivering shiny new track and crunchy new ballast! So off they go!

They all go to bed by midnight Christmas eve then out to play in the early hours of the 27th.

Beat me to it. I was going to suggest that it would make a good subject for a Ch4 Christmas cartoon.

I have seen a Christmas Special Traffic Notice in the 80's with a train running from North Pole Jct at 23.59 on Christmas Eve, arriving back 00.01 25th Dec.

Indeed they do, there's a certain amount of spillover from the normal berthing locations. There's always a few that get hit.

I remember a case of a 150/2 - The first one revinyled into 'local lines' livery in fact, that had been hit after spending Christmas & Boxing Day stabled in Penzance station back in the winter of '06.

The vinyl is graffiti in its own right so you might say the trains come pre-graffitied.

I have always thought it strange to run some of the nastiest trains in Britain for the past 100 years in a livery that shows a train that a lot of people would much prefer to travel in.

... in which you show you don't know what the "local lines" FGW livery actually is! "local lines" looks like this- the "lines" are made up of station names.

They must have changed it. FGW were sending their trains into Brighton with pictures of trains on the outside.

That's the best thing I've ever read!
Thanks.

Mind you, one of the things that has always made me laugh in the 153s is the rather random strip of foam on the inside of the doors - Often labeled as a Orange Strip, Orange Handle or Pink Strip.

But that was never what was reffered to as the "Local Lines" livery- which is a varient of the "Dynamic Lines" livery used on the HSTs/180s (including Hull Trains). I think the graphics you're thinking of were applied by the prevvious operator, and not to the 150s

Techinacally i think at one point it might have been and at one point possibly even so according to a few of FGW's press releases a few years back (even if for a limited time only), Previous GW Franchise liveries have included though:

Visit Bristol Class 143
http://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/UK...s-143/16273166_fhxBwx#!i=1235255020&k=SGjXnFW

Visit (various attractions / scenic places of) The South West Class 150s.
http://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/UK...s-150/16273361_64qPFR#!i=2262018210&k=RXGct2D

The Great Scenic Railways of Devon & Cornwall / The Heart Of Wessex / The Looe Valley Explorer / St Ives Bay Belle Class 153s.
http://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/UK...s-153/16273753_khG4Zf#!i=1222660420&k=hGLNkjh

And the mostly plain old Silver Class 158s - mostly still with Alphaline branding / maroon doors - to distance themselves from their Wales & Borders cousins with blue doors.
http://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/UK...s-153/16273753_khG4Zf#!i=1222660420&k=hGLNkjh

- I have to say in a way how dissapointing it is to look through those and see 158s working the Exemouth branch!

And First Transpennine Exress / First Scotrail in the first years of the GW Franchise.
http://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/UK...t-Western-class-158/16222008_Zv7Tph#!p=1&n=15

Although these days, the term 'Local Lines' is only used for the livery, whilst the units are plainly under the 'West Fleet / West of England Fleet', whilst as you say 'Dynamic Lines' is used for the 165 / 166 / TPE 170 / 180 / 185 & HST Fleets, and City Lights is used for FCC.
