Which sprinter do you love the most?

Big fan of all the sprinters but I love the 156s the most :D

I love the 159. I'm not sure why though... I think it's the livery - just looks amazing =D

Technically 158/159 are not "Sprinters" but "Expresses" (IIRC). And, of course, 156s are "Super Sprinters". In theory they were intended for different markets, and should not really be compared. Sadly that has been lost sight of, with the result that 150s can be used for long distance stuff, and 158s on short-hop urban journeys.

It's got to be the 156.

There is something intrinsically reliable looking about them. Especially with the snow-ploughs fitted. They are a bit spartan inside now though.

Do sometimes wonder if they could have been developed a bit further... 100mph capable and Air-con would have made them a very practical unit.

I HATE Sprinters there ugly, uncomfortable, ancient, disgusting, full of graffiti inside, unwelcoming and normally come with there own collection of on board chavs!!!

and the class 150 has to be the worst train in the UK!!!

I wonder if a cross between a 210 and a 156 might have been a good idea.

For those unaware, the Class 210 was an experimental DEMU design contemporaneous with the prototype 150 (and 151) with a similar bodyshell design (also similar to classes 317-322). I wonder if the layour might have been better suited to the "long distance" Super Sprinter door layout and use? Of course, there would be a resultant loss in capacity (which I guess was one of the reasons the 150 was favoured over the 210).

142 is better?

The Northern 150s are getting to quite a terrible state inside, the 142s do seem better looked after at the moment.

I voted for class 158, but the 155s have their own charm as there are only 7 left (travel on them all regularly :D). However, I'm not sure I 'love' any of them.

Aside from non-existant classes, I think the point that the 150 is designed for a very different sort of service is valid- they are a "Metro" type class, with the ⅓/⅔ door arrangement.

The 155 and 156 were intended for longer journeys, with the 158 (and then 159) to a certain extent being intended as a plusher version (thus 1st class sections). They shouldn't really be seen as interchangeable with 150s- the door arrangement makes them less suitable for services with close busy stops, whilst a 150 really isn't suitable for lengthy journeys.

Seeing as its a machine, I do not feel emotions such as love for them but IMO the best of the sprinter lot is the 158

i wasn't a fan until i rode one from Manchester that was 3 pacers in multiple full of Taylor Swift fans now that's an experience...this guy got on and was completely perplexed as to why there was like 100 people wearing tee shirts with Swift written on the front!!!

You gotta love pacers!!! http://pacer-pete.webs.com/

Since when was comparing a near enough as built pacer with a heavily refurbished (including tables) 150 a fair comparison?

As Vulcan said, the majority of Northern 150s are in a terrible state, the Pacers do seem to get more TLC.

156s. Great, versatile units. The variety of routine workings, from Glasgow-Anniesland to WHL and the odd Liverpool-Norwich run, shows how useful they are. They're reliable, comfortable, and I think quite rateable.

I'd go for 158s, which I think take all the good bits from the 156s and go further. But the clearance issues (especially in Scotland, where they're severely restricted!) and retrograde progress in some areas deters me from this.

I'm going for 150, 156s and 158s are good but 150s are very efficient at doing what they were designed for - shifting high volumes of passengers quickly!

I voted 153 as they have some character, but the best overall unit is the 158/9 for the luxuries they have over the other members of the family

For me it is a close call but the 150 just nudges ahead ad it is a jack of all trades. They have been used on everything from stopping services to fill in for Intercity. My all time favorite 150 run was when the 1st Norwich service from Liverpool St was a 150 used it a couple of times and it was impresive to see what the 150 could do. The 150's are the diesel equivelant of the 317 which for me is one of the finest EMU's around.
I like the 156 and 158n but having used them several times on peak services around Nottingham , Derby and Glasgow they take longer to load and unload due to the door postions. 153's are nice but preferred them when they were 2 car 155's. Always wondered why BR didnt make some bubble cars from 150's .
