Why is Wilmslow - Crewe so expensive?

Off peak return getting on for £9! With a railcard, £5.60! In contrast, Manchester return is £3.25 from Wilmslow, and I can get a Wayfarere for £5 that includes a generous slice of the North West rail, bus, and tram network!

Its because Manchester - Wilmslow is in the GMPTE, Where as the route to Crewe is not I'm afraid.

What sort of length of journey is this? I know on XC for the 12min Oakham-Stamford trip it is £8.40 for an off-peak day single.

Also XC, Hinckley to Narborough is an 8min journey and that is £5.80 for an off-peak single, £7.10 for anytime single.

I think these are made worse by being cross county boundary journeys, so don't attract subsidy, but that could be wrong.

Trips within PTE areas have artificially low prices, as soon as you step over the border it's back to 'normal' rate tickets.

Hinckley and Narborough are both in Leicestershire actually. Might also have something to do with the fact that there are no other alternatives apart from the trains to make that journey, I think.

"Getting on for £9" - according to Trainline the off-peak fare is £8.40 !

Can get Crewe- Stockport for the same fare ...

Its because Manchester - Wilmslow is in the GMPTE, Where as the route to Crewe is not I'm afraid.

On the contary Wilmslow is actually in East Cheshire Council administration and the Manchester - Wilmslow fare is set by Northern, not GMPTE as is the case with Greater Manchester fares. Although it does come under the GMPTE Wayfarer scheme and has special Arrangements with System One (Bus Only) as a result of it being part of SELNEC, GMPTE's predecessor, soon to be Transport for Greater Manchester Executive.

Wilmslow - Crewe is 18.18miles (as the crow flies, according to google maps)

Wilmslow - Manchester Piccadilly is 10.68 miles

The price per mile is therefore almost the same, to answer your original question, it is more expensive because it is further. You could argue why is a Wayfarer so cheap.

It's £8.40 and is a 30 minute journey if you board a stopper. It's actually cheap if you compare it to Hartford-Liverpool at £9.40 for a 30 minute journey with a few stops
