Spotted this poster out today (Wigan Wallgate), is this closure in relation to these works?
There is one of these posters at Southport as well. Given that the Preston - Bolton - Manchester corridor is unaffected, but both Atherton and Westhoughton are, it likely is to do with works at Hindley.

I didn’t realise Southport services were considered important enough to warrant diversions, but otherwise the only Wigan - Manchester services all day would be the peak only North Western - Victoria 319 shuttles. What isn’t mentioned anywhere on the poster is that Kirkby services will terminate at Wigan.

Any idea if this hourly Southport - Oxford Road via Chat Moss service will be all Sprinters? I can’t see them deploying 769s for 2 days with nowhere for them to switch to electric.

Northern and National Rail websites arent listing the engineering works.
Ye I tried to find them too, it seemed like even a staff member at Wigan Wallgate was shocked by it considering they took a picture too.
The busses are on RTT and Northern's website, haven't checked other sources

I know it's a very short distance but could they pop them up at Deansgate for Oxford Road? They stop there.
Also it's technically mentioned in the fact that they line specifically notes "Manchester Oxford Road -> Southport", but that could definitely just be my interpretation.
It's nice to know Wallgate P3 will see proper passenger use, I can only recall seeing a passenger service there once (but 3 or so arriving), a 769 half-cancelled.

Is P3 still in use? They disconnected the PIDS a long time ago and eventually removed them I think?

A reminder that this thread is for the posting of Wigan - Bolton Electrification construction updates only.

If anyone wants to discuss anything else such as service patterns etc then they are welcome to start an appropriate thread elsewhere.

Thanks :)

Compound has been set up by bridge 17, closest bridge to Crow Nest Junction on the Hindley lines.

It's also fenced off. Guess that's the works next weekend

Apologies. No, it's the first bridge after Crow Nest towards Westhoughton. My mistake. Early start this morning...

The compound at Jacks Lane was set up early December, but apart from two piles of stone arriving when it was set up nothing has happened since.

Seeing as they appear to be going via the Chat Moss they can go electric all the way from Wigan to Deansgate, though it would require a short operational stop at Wigan Station Junction to raise/lower the pan.

I noticed a flattened bit of land next to the track on approach to Hindley with construction equipment moving around.
I suspect this is probably related since it's directly next to the tracks (where the old tracks were)
I wasn't expecting to see anything so I don't have a photo

Hi Folks,

New member, first post etc.

From a walk around the area this morning I could see that the bridge leading to Westhoughton Golf Club is in the process of being removed. I assume the same is happening with the bridge on Jack's lane, as I could see and hear heavy equipment around it, but I didn't get close enough to confirm.

Sorry, I didn't have a phone/camera with me, so no pictures, but I will try to get some if I go out that way again in the coming days/weeks.

Welcome. Thanks so much for update. Really looking forward to seeing more updates from you.

So I can get my bearings, is this the bridge near the golf club you are talking about?

A long train full of concrete blocks and a crane is parked between Hindley road bridge and the iron bridge this afternoon.

Will they start the piling work when the bridges have been raised and the stations have been done or in between?
They will likely start piling shortly before the bridges are due to be raised and done, as normally you can pile either side of bridges. Stations may require pilings to be done separately, so would be done at the same time as other works if possible (or after enabling works but before finishing off).

I just realised it mentions level crossings, I'm pretty sure there aren't any level crossings between Lostock Jn and Wigan? Or are they doing on on a different line (e.g. towards Southport)
NR has a habit of not distinguishing different types of Level crossings, to them everything from footpaths to major roads count as LX. - here I assume they are talking about 1 public footpath crossing and 1 farm footpath accomodation crossing.

Looking at OpenRailwayMap (I should've done that first) I see 2 level crossings, which appear to both be foot crossings
I'm not surprised I didn't know them since I'm much more familiar with the Atherton Line.
They're not much either, the lower one doesn't even have paving to help step across the track (which is very odd to me), while the other does have.
