As far as 196s are concerned, if NR are on strike, nothing is going to be moving in or out of Shrewsbury, and therefore it's most likely the 196s won't be either - regardless of what's happening at TOC level.

Morning all
Does anyone know if the 196 is on the 08.00 BHM to SHR this morning please.
I'd like to know before I buy a ticket as it's a short turn round at SHR, especially as it's 5' late off Brum!

Most services during covid were 5 cars, that is until the 170/6s surrendered their centre carriages to CrossCountry to lengthen their /5s.
Pre COVID the first off Hereford getting to WOF at 7.49 was a 5 car, this split at BHM and then ran back as a 3. It gained it's 2 car running mate back early afternoon for a Hereford run that then returned for the school run back to BHM calling at Barnt Green. It then ran the 17:19 peak back and continued as a 5 car the rest of the diagram.

The morning peak into BHM and the afternoon in and out were normally full and standing.

That diagram was changed about 2 years before Covid if i recall & the 2 car actually went to Tyseley. The set that split & went to Hednesford was off the 06:47 ex Malvern which was a 4 car. The units arriving at New St at 13:09 went to Tyseley with a 5 car coming off to form the 13:50 Hereford which later formed the 17:19. They stopped the attach for the 17:19 some years ago due to potential delays in the rush hour, both waiting for the set from Tyseley & any issues coupling.

That sounds more like it. My commute to Birmingham stopped late 2018 with only a few trips in '19. Used to study the Twitter feed and live updates religiously to avoid any short forms (which were very common at the time).

Any ideas when the next 196 diagram is due to start? Presumably it will be the afternoon Shrewsbury peak?

Thanks

Looks like the morning diagrams have been cancelled but here are the evening diagrams for the first time of evening running.

I already posted it above. I doubt it’s going to run after the incident which shut Birmingham New Street down.

Seems the second diagram has begun! 0741 Birmingham - Shrewsbury has an UID 196 on. Can anyone confirm the next runs?

Couldn’t find a 07:41 Birmingham to Shrewsbury? However I’m told from a post from a Facebook group that 196101 and 196110 are in service today.

196101 2G09 2J10 2G15 2J16 2G21 2J22 1G53 1J68 2G31 2J32 2G35

196110 1GO5 2J06 1G14

If anyone is able to confirm this that would be excellent

Lots of units moving around today by the looks of the excellent Part Time Spotter blog:

Do we know whether there's any chance of a 196 being out this Sunday?

I rode my first 196 on Tuesday, having been in Birmingham for a meeting.

Overall, impressed.

Excellent lighting. Comfortable. Very airy and spacious.

They'll be a nice upgrade when they reach Hereford.

I was on the 0638 from Codsall to Wolverhampton this morning. The service was running late. Dwell times seemed long, the door release seamed to take ages. In terms of speed it felt slower than the 170’s with the driver being very cautious on the breaks into stations and accelerating slowly.

The interior was pleasant and comfortable enough for the journeys that these trains will be doing.

I’m sure once the drivers are familiar with the units that won’t be the case. The 170s are not exactly know for having spritely performance and I’m imagining the performance of a 196 to be at least on par with a 172, given the similar transmission and more powerful engine of the CAF unit.

Also don't forget time of year as well defensive driving techniques. adhesion and rail heads due to leaf fall season.
Particularly as the weather has been particularly bad in the past few days so that can play part as well. Likewise not only 196s did it effect. It also on Tuesday 01st November also created some 720s to substitute for 321s on Anglia they had a rough time to.
So leaf fall season does affect 196s to like everything else on the railway.

Its the time of year to be cautious coming into stations. That may have something to do with it.

Doors are actually quite quick to cycle, however the unit takes time to decide to engage traction and move.

The latter, Red leaf fall day, combined with new, unfamiliar units and a totally different braking system will do that.
Better to be late than have an overrun.

The line in question is also quite notorious for low adhesion. Factor in the new trains, and the fact there's very little margin for error with a 4 car train at most of the platforms, and you'd want to be very careful.

Last year in autumn I was on a 170 coming into Wolverhampton and we had to stop for a 390 to take the junction Infront, when we tried to move again we just wheel spinned, however after the driver invited sand into the show we were back moving again .
