WY Metro Card confusion

For many years I have owned a Zones 1-3 WY Metro Card under the assumption if I traveled to for example Huddersfield using a TPE train I would have to either buy a Leeds to Huddersfield or Dewsbury to Huddersfield ticket depending on if the TPE called at Dewsbury or went straight to Huddersfield.

However, on Friday my friend at work who has a Zones 2-5 WY Metro Card came on a work outing with me to Leeds from Saltaire and managed to get the conductor to sell him on board the train from Saltaire a Burley Park to Leeds ticket!

So now I'm confused as I'm positive I read somewhere before the train must call at the stations, but by the other logic I could just be buying Mirfield to Huddersfield tickets (Yet travelling on the express TPE from Leeds still).

So who is right?!

I don't know what the score is with Metro Cards, and if they count for 19(c) splits or not, but I'd just point out that Burley Park is not between Shipley and Leeds.

Your friend should have bought a Shipley - Leeds ticket for a Saltaire - Leeds journey on a 2-5 Metro Card.

Bus and Rail MetroCards are PTE products.

Let's refer to the map.

As already stated, these don't 'count' as seasons for 19c splits. For Leeds to Huddersfield on a zone 1-3 M-Card, a ticket needs to be sold from Leeds or dewsbury (the latter only if called there), or if on the Northern stopper from Mirfield or bradford depending on route. Some TPE conductors may offer you something more favourable, in which case be grateful. Note that really you should purchase your extension ticket BEFORE boarding.

Saltaire to leeds on a zone 2-5, ticket needed was Shipley-Leeds. When Kirkstall station opens, it will be in zone 2 I expect. But that will be next year or 2016. Burley Park is completely incorrect, and this passenger was ticketless between Shipley and Leeds.
