The media are to blame for this. They "hype up" everyones chances as though Team GB are invincible.

Whats happened to "Team Ireland" - their performance appears to be pathetic compared to other smaller European Nations such as Norway, Sweden, Denmark etc

Good Luck to Katy Taylor boxing for a Gold this afternoon for Ireland

To be fair it's only 20 odd years since we returned from an Olympics with only 1 Gold Medal .....hard to imagine today

Again, I would agree with you. The situation would not have improved without Lottery funding. To quote the Daily Telegraph: "money well spent".

How the Spaniards must be laughing, as their western neighbours (Portugal) have yet to win anything.

It appears the Australians have been moaning about the lack of medals they have won,Here is what someone sent into one of their papers

"It appears that Kazakhstan will probably beat Australia in the gold medal count. The agony. I can just about stand the Poms and the Kiwis laughing at us; but Borat?"

One of the best aspects of Team GB's success is that medallists have come from all over the UK - England, Scotland,Wales and NI.

Indeed Yorkshire seems to be a source of many winners on its own :p

Last I checked Yorkshire would have been ranked seventh in the medal table, but that was a few days ago now.

Wealth against medal records to show if there is a correlation between the upper classes and Olympic successes.

Which would make some sense, those with more leisure time have more time for sport and training, and those going to public school would tend to have an advantage. However, that's not always the case, especially with athletics, according to some of the profiles the BBC have been putting out.

Gold in the team dressage our first medal of any type in the event and with that Team GB go to twenty golds the first time we've broken that barrier since 1908 and the first time we hosted the games.

Does it matter? Really? Why should anyone care what class a medal winner comes from? The only thing I'd say is that work should be done on ensuring that sports in school and specifically sport in state schools is reinforced as it seems to me in many state schools sport is just not considered important and further that many don't even have the facilities to provide sport for their students (beyond interpretive dance or something of it's ilk).

I suspect you might not like what you saw. In terms of medals per GDP, I think some African countries might well come out quite high.
[By the way, please do not let me think that one as sensible as yourself seems to take the lazy route of equating "class" and "wealth". That hasn't really been true since the 1700s, if then]

Forget 1908 - with one man and his dog in some of the events

This is without doubt (whatever else happens) the greatest performance by any British Team in the Olympics EVER.....

Well done Team GB :p

Victoria Pendleton couldn't bring in a gold to finish her career and gets the silver. Whilst Laura Trott at the age of twenty has got her second gold from these Olympics.

That's good to see. I never meant to equate class and wealth, I just couldn't think of the right wording.

Did anyone else watch the US v Canada women's semi final in the football last night? I only caught extra time but those 30 minutes were well played, definitely a good advert for women's football

The left never fail to amuse me with this sort of rubbish.

To equate our Olympic celebrations with the Nazis is contemptible but entirely predictable.

Because he wasn't considered for the opening ceremony he has to rubbish our efforts to try and get himself some publicity.

Why do the left find it so hard to celebrate anything this country achieves, they take absolute delight in trying to knock any success we ever have.

It has been in the news that more than 50% of GB's gold medalists in Beijing went to private schools.

Well done Sally Pearson winning Gold in the Hurdles to add to Mears Gold earlier....nice to see a little more of the inset Union Flag.

Garabarz adds to GB's haul with a Bronze in the High Jump:p
