Were there not services at one time which ran Wigan Wallgate-Manchester Victoria- Rochdale- Oldham Mumps - Manchester Victoria that terminated in the bay platforms there ?

The timetable changed one or two years before the heavy rail service via Oldham ceased in 2009 so that it became independent from the Victoria to Halifax line. Before that, the bay platform wasn't used during the main part of the day.

Anyone know why we still have a temp speed restriction of 5 in place between Piccadilly and New Islington? Seems like it's been there for a good few months now, trams just crawl up the incline out of the underpass then speed up a little before arriving at the station.

Track issues?

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
Ashton-under-Lyne is the correct wording.

Perhaps someone in the area, stating local town pride, should complain to Northern Rail that the nameplate on the heavy-rail railway station platform has been incorrectly entered, whereas the ones on the yet-to-be opened Manchester Metrolink stop is correctly worded.

3026 made it to Ashton last night on test. TMS picked the tram up on the PIDs and everything went well.

And 3070 + 3071 coupled together are currently parked at Oldham Mumps, new Mumps as they were dynamic testing on the Town Centre Route!

Letter in today's MEN from a Wythenshawe resident blasting the fact that TfGM say Metrolink expansion will reduce car journeys yet Wythenshawe residents mainly use public transport as it is. The reader suggests if you want to reduce car journeys then you need to build lines between the Airport and where people who actually drive to the Airport are from (they suggest Prestbury as one such place.)

Work seems to be progressing on the proposed extensions at quite a pace.

Does anyone know what has happened to the plans to create a second Manchester crossing, and when that may be expected to be operational?

So the village of Prestbury, population something like 3,000 requires a Metro line to the Airport does it? You sure this person was telling the truth and from Wythenshawe and not Prestbury

It was the subject of a public inquiry in January and the ministerial decision is still awaited. Some preparatory work is going ahead anyway. Diversions of buried services along the route seem to be about to start. For the first nine months of 2014 the Metrolink tracks at Victoria will be remodelled; while this work goes on, trams will pass through Victoria on a single bidirectional track without stopping. At the same time the Victoria roof is being replaced; demolition of the old roof is already half done.

I guess the Second City Crossing (or 2CC, as it's known) will probably be finished around 2016 or the first half of 2017.

2CC is vital for additional metrolink services. Mosley Street is at capacity (25tph) now and even with MediaCity trams being cut back to Cornbrook that only gives paths for one additional tram service, most likely to be used for East Disbury - Shaw services. The issue is getting it built in time for the airport line opening which would have to terminate at the remodelled Deansgate-Castlefield. And then if the Port Salford line comes into play you're snookered so when the MEN ran its survey I don't quiet understand why people were saying its unnesacary. In the city there's lots of utility markings around the route and as snowball says diversions are going on. It's supposed to open in 2016 but yes it'll probably open in 2017. The remodelled Victoria and St Peters Square will be the interchange points for the new line which has lead me to realise this - no Mosley Street has gone it'll only be Piccadilly which will have the same track and platform layout as it did when it opened (and even that's not fully true as there used to be a scissors crossover on London Road however it was removed). St Peters Square becoming islands, market stets been widened as has Piccadilly Gardens, Shudehill was built in 2003 and Victorias getting done up!

What about Deansgate-Castlefield (or G-MEX as it was known back in the day) - its not changed it platform layout or track layout - only the name afaik

Construction on the airport line going well. It would be terrible public relations for Metrolink if it were to sit unused for a year, two years or 2.5 years awaiting completion of 2CC, so I think it will open with services initially being turned back at Deansgate-Castlefield (which should have been remodelled by then) or Cornbrook.

That's getting remodelled with a third track and terminating platform which on SCC we think will be used if the 2CC isn't ready when the airport line opens
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Indeed but that didn't stop the initial section of the EML sitting dormant for years however metrolinks starting to get decent press after East Didsbury opening early and Ashton will too.

Well they were also complaining about Wythenshawe losing the few green spaces it and looking more like an industrial estate has for a 'pointless' Metrolink service that they don't need so unless it's an Estate Agent from Prestbury who sells property in Wythenshawe I would assume it is someone from Wythenshawe.

IF there was to be a line from the Airport to Prestbury the most sensible route would seem to be via Wilmslow and Mottram St Andrew and logically Prestbury would only be a temporary terminus (like Chorlton was) until it continued to Macclesfield or Bollington so it would be a lot more than just 3,000 people served.

I can honestly say...hand on heart...that it was not I...:D

Nice to see Prestbury getting a mention, nonetheless.

The surname on the letter is O'Brien.

Indeed, on SCC someone who was out snapping in Oldham this week was talking to a worker saying he wouldn't be surprised if some kind of triple opening was on the cards
