I dont know, given a choice between a Victorian frontage or a Medieval frontage as a planning officer I would prioritise the Medieval.
Which medieval frontage is that and how does the music room building respect it better? (Forgive me as a stranger, I do have Google software of course). Interestingly, if you 'walk' up Hunts bank with Street view and then turn at the top along the station frontage, it reverts to the park scene - try it.

Not being aware of the street names involved, there have been two noted architectural carbuncle remains still left standing facing Manchester Victoria station:-
A)..On the opposite side of the road to the restored glass panelled canopy with the names of places served by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
B)..On the opposite side of the road where the Metrolink exits Victoria Station to its meeting with Corporation Street (I do not mean the building that suddenly was garbed with scaffolding).

Behind the white building (thats the bit of the complex relocated in front of the station) in the image I posted earlier, the buildings date from 1422!

For more info you can read the masterplan.

a) This may go as part of a cycle hub scheme. Not clear what it could replace though.
b) This is due to be demolished next year as part of a new hotel development, which will fill the existing footprint. I think the facade onto Corporation Street will be retained though.

I passed through Victoria on Thursday, do you know that there are no cash machines at all on the station.....
Had to walk almost to The Printworks.
These days when they are in local shops, pubs even parks, you would have thought a major railway station would have a couple.....

Unlike Piccadilly station, although things may change with the refurbishment.

There‘s one upstairs in the arena foyer.

Thanks very much , have perused this and am still appalled. If they needed a better building, another location would have been better. This monstrosity is crammed in against Victoria and a pleasant open park space between the medieval building and the station would have been ideal. The council could have helped here with land swap perhaps. My opinion is that the Victorians, whom they chastise for insensitivity, didn't do too badly. Talk about the pot and the kettle!:(

I'm pretty sure there is one in beween the toilets and the shop as you exit towards corporation st.

Yes youre right, its just in 'Cigar Alley' at the back of Mace's shop and its been in situ for a while... unless its not accessible with the roof works etc?

Not any more there isn't. Nearest cash machine to Victoria station is the Co-op across the street from the same exit as the trams leave to go up Balloon Street. There is also a fee payable ATM by the Mace shop inside the station.

Day light on the other side of the portal as of today!

Will there be a new external wall constructed from the Metrolink wall opening up to the overbridge on Cheetham Hill Road in the plans for the station upgrade ? Will there be any upgrading of the small but poorly-aesthetic area at the left of the Metrolink wall opening in the picture, as this is something of an eyesore at present ?

Getting shot of the 'Hanging Gardens of Victoria' would help(see photo).:D

Platform 17 - the northern-most, east-facing bay - was very, very rarely used for passenger trains though. Originally it was for parcels use and latterly also used for stabling sometimes. Platform 16, although a through platform, was rarely used as such. It was more or less exclusively used as an arrivals platform for trains terminating from the Bolton lines.

Not particularly relevant to the thread I know, but it's always worth indulging in a bit of nostalgia for Victoria in happier times!

Even after parcels traffic ceased, platform 17 was used to stable stock from the then loco hauled 'Club Trains' after Red Bank sidings closed in 1989.

Think it's just the bits of roof that covered the metrolink entrance and fish dock area don't think it's come off the bit where the trains come in however I don't often venture through vic (Piccadilly for me ;))

Dunno, might be alot more venturing through here when most North Transpennine services are diverted here & when the Ordsall Curve opens, that'll really open the floodgates! ;) And it kicks off next May I believe with the new Liverpool - Newcastle service - and they'll be even more when the Ordsall Curve opens ...

The Liverpool to Newcastle service will be going through Victoria?

Obviously not with 350's, but in the future perhaps?

With 185s initially, but will more than likely evolve into 350s when TP electrification is complete via Stalybridge to Leeds over the longer term. I assume as the electrification network expands operators will have more EMUs on order. You also can't rule out Sunday diversions by Scottish services into Vic due to engineering, and when the latter is electrified, these will be 350 operated.

I wonder if it would pile more pressure on the CLC line getting electrified?

It'll be 185s initially of course, but even when the wires are up it's unlikely to be 350s- the TPE 350/4s are only a stopgap for the Scottish services and will probably find a long-term home in the West Midlands along with their sister units. I do worry that switching most of the TPE services to Victoria will be met with moans from many users, though personally I find Victoria to be a far more convenient location. People just don't like change!

Victoria is far more convenient for me than Piccadilly, with be being served by the Chat Moss line!
