I just got back from Doncaster. I didn't make it unfortunately, along with the whole group. I got caught out by the TEA Occ test where you have to count the tones while going through the phone directory. It was harder than I thought.

I think the rest of the group failed on the dots? The group of four of us were on our way home within 30 minutes of arrival. Well done to Polar for passing and good luck to the rest of you in the process.

By the way, I was one of the 40 chosen from 2000 to do the assessments, and I am 54 years old. So don't listen to anyone who says the railway won't look at you past 50. If you're the right guy to do the job and can get through the tests, you can apply well into your fifties it seems and get through the sift.

By the way, I got selected for the tests during the latest recruitment drive, and I'd applied for Acton.

I failed mine too :( I thought I did quiet well in TEA occ. I failed on the memory test thing where we read the paragraph and answer the questions.
This was my first assessment.
Can any one please advise that how many assessments a person can do?
If I want to do it privately is it acceptable to the TOCs ? & where could I go for the private assessment?

I'm wondering is anyone else from this thread starting as a trainee driver for DBS on the 13th October ? I received my contract through Saturday training is in Toton Nottingham, and with all the different stages that people are at, am inquiring too see if anyone else has had the same news, to say it's been along 3 months since I found out is a understament lol, and I'm really excited it's finally getting nearer.

I applied for acton and yes latest advert.

There was only three of us on monday 1 guy failed on the trp dials test. The other guy got through to interview and i would have thought he would pass as he was an ex underground driver but i left first.

Really sorry for you guys that didnt make it the tests really aren't fun but all you can do is practice and try again! The worst test for me was the 30min stare at the grey/black square think my whole face was twitching by the end.

Hi Polar,
Well done mate, good to hear you passed. Can I ask if it was the first ever assessment you did or have you had any assessment before this assessment you just passed.

What tests did you have to do?

I've done all the test with another operator and applied for the same depot as you. It's either going to go one way or the other. Everyone completes the tests then they contact those who already have completed them OR I receive a dear john letter in a few months/year. Congratulations on passing them by the way!

Thanks. Which tests did the assessment contain altogether? I can't seem to find alot of information on the new one.

I know candidates took the new tests but out of interest was there still a written test on top of glop as mentioned in the 2013 intake thread and was there a numeracy test thanks

I applied for Thornaby and heard nowt back. From what i can glean on here we may have to wait months for a reply / no jobs up north due to DBS losing contracts / HR and contracts department don't communicate with each other / DBS advertise then realise they don't need anyone. Any or all of these might apply, it's a big mystery. ****-poor in my opinion but no doubt some expert will come along and inform me of the error of my ways and unsuitability to drive a train :D

I find it quite comical really, I took the tests and was told I had the highest scores they'd seen for a long time, already hold a job on the railway so the whole working to rules+regs, comms, etc in the interview went down extremely well yet I never got a look in after that. Just holding out now to see if anymore positions come up locally as apparently I'm on the waiting list but I'm not holding my breath! If I did that well with the tests/interview but there were apparently more "suitable" candidates that got the job then what chance do I have?!

That's quite worrying for those of us who are coming from outside the industry. If I got that answer ('someone more suitable'), and I'd done that well in the tests and interview, I'd swear blind that they'd gone with an internal candidate.

Yes same here, I also was told my scores were very good and have years of railway experience in high up jobs. I had an interview at Immingham docks depot but was unsuccessful!! so I rang for feedback and was told the sun shone out my arse at interview but yet also got told there were "more suitable" candidates whom were selected.so I asked how can I better for next time and he said "just do the same" which was not helpful.so why wasn't I chosen if I was so good at interview? I'm also in the so called "list" for upcoming vacancies. I'm worried about if its like the rest of the railway you have to know someone or be family/friends has that's usually the case.

Lets hope not and good luck for all awaiting notification of upcoming vacancies

I had interview with freightliner and the training manager told me that he prefers non railway background trainees so I wouldn't worry.

I've had nothing at all since initial application, except an email saying I am still being considered. However I have passed all the tests and MMI this year (sat for another FOC)

I have also heard nothing since sending off my application form.

Does anyone know their email address to contact them?

Good lord, there are some replies on here that don't fill me with confidence. I've got my next set of tests this Friday in Liverpool, so fingers crossed, however I'm going into it with realistic expectations!

Got my start date :D

congrats

quick question I realise DB have dropped the mechanics but in the past it appeared there was a numerical test can you tell me if they still use this in addition to the new assessments? If so was it easy enough?

I am a qualified driver, I didn't sit any tests just a interview and medical.
