C'mon - everyone on here has a bagful of interesting but useless facts about railway stations which can be used to annoy people down the pub, lose a girlfriend or win a million in a quiz.

EG Dent is England's highest (mainline) station, 1150'.....but which is the lowest?
Which sells the most beer? Has the most expensive toilets? Covers the most acres? Any haunted? Etc etc etc!

Please, the more irrelevant and pointless facts the better!!

I believe, back from when I wrote a NR route finder about 15 years ago, I found that Swindon was the most remote station in the UK.

Fishguard Harbour has the most regular service of ALL stations in the UK.

There is a train departing at 0300 each day, and one at 1500 each day. Every day, including Sundays. So there is a train every 12 hours.

Regular. Not frequent. But regular.

And as an extension, Arisaig is the furthest West and Lowestoft East, travelling as soon as available would cost 166.50 and take a fraction under 22 and a half hours (21 and a half the other way)

I wondered about that too. I'm guessing that Swindon is the station which is the farthest from any other station ?

Further from any other open station by rail.

Actually it's not that bad, about 14 miles, just a long way for such a major town and a major part of the railway, I find it surprising. CORE isn't working anymore, but from some ramblings a decade ago, Hereford and Swindon down south are beaten by Okehampton, by Berwick upon Tweed wins in England and Stranraer in Scotland.

I'd always thought (perhaps wrongly!) that Dundee was the lowest non-subterranean station in the UK, but the lowest overall (discounting LU) I'd hazard a guess that it'd be either one of the Northern City Line stations or possibly the Wirral line loop.

Huddersfield probably sells a fair bit of beer from the two pubs, one of which I'm sitting in right now, but I'd be surprised if it was the top. It does have two missing numbers from a total of 6 platforms (1-8, no 3 or 7) but again it probably isn't the highest on that count either. It is however (by all means correct me if I'm wrong!) the only grade-1 listed station that isn't in a settlement with city status.

Chinley, the only station in Derbyshire and the whole East Midlands served by First Transpennine Express even if it is only once per day.

Lockerbie, the only station in Scotland not served by ScotRail.

Coleshill Parkway, the only station in Warwickshire (I think) not served by London Midland.

Manchester Airport Metrolink, the only Metrolink stop actually containing the word "Manchester".

The platforms at TM are numbered quite logically apart from the absence of 14. (2 is still there but not visibly numbered and only used for stabling.)
They go in ascending order west to east. Most of the through platforms are very long and frequently hold two trains at the same time, so are numbered as two separate platforms, odd numbers at the North end.
13 and 15 are much shorter, so aren't split in the middle.

If you really want a confusing platform layout - Waverley - now that's a different matter.

If you really want a confusing platform layout - Waverley - now that's a different matter.

Waverley's platforms are numbered in a clockwise direction, starting at the north. If there's a more straightforward numbering system, I can't think what it is.

Nope - New Cross also has a Platform C and a Platform D

No. There are probably quite a few of those. Crookston and Hawkhead are another two.

I believe the last line of your post is correct!

Denton and Reddish South would be examples of a perfectly regular, but very infrequent service.

I've no idea if this is true, in reality it's probably Dalwhinnie or Rannoch and I doubt if anyone has measured it anyway, but anyone who uses Queen Street regularly will know exactly what I mean![emoji3]

On the platform numbering system - Leeds is unique AFAIK for its completely non-sequential Platform W. The additional platform, now P1, built in the late 1990s on the site of the old parcels sidings and the older Leeds Wellington station, hence the W.



On the statistics side, my wife and I represent 25% of the annual user figures for Teesside Airport station for 2014. It recorded 8 visitors in that period.
