Ladies, Gentlemen and backontrack...

Mod edit - Spoiler below from the new Star Wars film - Highlight or copy&paste to read it more easily.

I am sorry to announce the death of Captain Han Solo at the hands of Kylo Ren on Starkiller base - cause of death was lightsaber injury.

Now, if you will excuse me, I must go and wipe the tears off the keyboard. I am utterly devastated and so was the entire cinema I have just got back from which did a midnight showing

I'm sure that you have allocated yourself as a 'gentleman', HMS Ark Royal.

I have never seen a Star Wars film in my life and I find the hype about this film a bit tiresome. Having said that I find the hype about most films tiresome!
The thread title does say spoilers so I would say if you didn't want to read about the film then don't read the thread

He gave a warning that there was a spoiler and the title gave nothing away, so why click on the thread if you don't want to know what happens?

To be fair, the spoiler alert was only added by forum staff after it was reported.

I am in the same camp as Minilad, in that I don't understand the hype surrounding what is essentially fiction, but I get the point that some people do, and that is their choice.

An acquaintance of mine is a real anti-apple person and always has a right old rant about people who queue for hours to obtain a new apple product on the day of release. He is going to see the film this morning at a cinema in Birmingham and spent all night outside the cinema (despite having pre booked tickets) with other geeks dressed as a stormtrooper.
He couldn't get the irony in what he was doing.
Now I know geekdom lends itself to obsessive behaviour but Star Wars really does seem to take it to a whole new level.
Still. Takes all sorts I suppose. Would be boring if we all liked the same thing! I mean some people even like duffs ;)

Never seen the films. Obviously I'm aware of the Star Wars fan base. I can imagine people are passionate about it and maybe a spoiler warning should have been added by the op at the start, but scum? Noooooo. Not really called for.

Yes, it was me that reported it, I had hoped the post would be deleted.

I'm not really into the hype either, but clearly some people are and the OP has given out a huge spoiler to what is potentially the biggest film of the decade - I stand by my phrase, clearly HMS Bigmouth saw the first showing of the film so bought into the hype and decided it was funny being a bigmouth and spoiling other forum members enjoyment of a new film sequel that some had been waiting over 30 years for.

An apology might have been nice from HMS Bigmouth, but I not hold my breath.

The internet is a weird old place, full of folk with the strangest pastimes and tastes. But the least explicable of all are those who do things simply to hack strangers off, whether it is with major things like viruses, or trivial little annoyances like the OP. Please explain why you did it, in terms that do not make you look like a five year old.

Agreed. I can't really think of anyone else on this forum who would have wanted to do that.

I think it might just be inexperience. I realise I'm not yet at the stage where I can advise people, but I have benefitted a great deal from just looking at a post before I send it off and thinking: 'Is this necessary'?

I'm sure that HMS Ark Royal could have aired his views on the film more diligently without being sensationalist and trying to tell everyone what happened. The 'tears on the keyboard' bit could easily still have been said without mentioning the spoiler itself. I don't know the intentions of the post, but I'm inclined to think that it was not malicious. You just need to know what to say and be less clumsy about it at times. And I speak from experience. The admins know that I have been close to moderation - which is not a punishment, but rather a measure taken as guidance (though incompatible with the Quiz Forum). This may well be deleted for 'discussion of a moderating decision', but I'm now willing to talk about the experience in the open - I know other users have. And in the end, I avoided it (for now!) and am being more careful with my posts. You (not personally) just need to know what to say and what not to say. You may not have bad intentions, but you will still end up alienating users (once again, I speak from experience). So why not try to take more care?

Agreed. Best get rid of it before anyone else can see it.

I've re-coloured the text in the original post - now back to the topic of the new film, or this thread really does risk being deleted! :)

I believe that it should be GENERAL Solo.

He has left the Republic and his rank after his son turned to the Dark Side

Not very likely
