Elton John

I've never been greatly impressed by his songs or music, but in recognition of the huge public interest in him over the last 45 years, and its enthusiasm for his songs and his music, I thought I'd start a thread to gather any opinions on here.
We have to recognise that his public profile has not entirely had to rely on his songwriting abilities. That profile was surely boosted by his association with Princess Diana (Candle in the Wind) and by other, much less public, personal events.
But musically, has he really been a "great" figure?

Any other thoughts on his discography, or on him, as a person?

His music in the 70's was great (Crocodile Rock, Saturday Night, Rocketman etc) but he took a turn in the 80's to ballads and mushy **** that turned me right off his music

Sacrifice is a very good ballad IMO.

Elton has come up with some great tunes over the years and he's a good entertainer, not that I've seen him live.

The Streisand effect did get the better of me though.

That is a good point, no one cares about that. I thought this thread was getting ready to talk about bonkers rules etc while many people dont seem to care to submit papers to the Edinburgh high court. :roll:

I have no thoughts or feelings about Elton John but when I go through his catalogue of music I do find numerous songs that I have enjoyed over the years and still have on my mp3 player.

He has been going strong for many many years. How many artists today will still be their music played in 30yrs ?

Did you (or anyone on here for that matter) ever see the bit in South Park where Chef is telling the kids about how he brought Bernie and Elton together? There's a flashback bit with a young Elton singing lovely tuneful songs with awful lyrics while a young Bernie sings brilliant lyrics over some horribly discordant and atonal music... Chef introduces the two and the rest was history!

I don't think Isaac Hayes (who voiced the Chef character) really did introduce them to each other though.

IIRC, although Bernie Taupin and Elton John co-wrote just about every one of his songs, they never (or rarely) wrote them together. Bernie wrote the lyrics then sent them to Elton John who wrote a melody around them. However they wrote them though, they produced some all time classics, in my opinion.

Any thoughts I might have on his private life won't be shared here. Thats far too Daily Mail for me

Three Way Love Affair popped up on youtube the other day. I hadn't heard about that song until quite it was mentioned by an american newspaper. Not really interested in his songs, but the fact the song wasn't being played in the UK (although I believe some Scottish stations were playing it, just not online) was interesting if it had been censored for reasons other than good taste.

Well right now the Daily Mail won't be sharing then either, so perhaps you do have something in common! Not that I care about his private life mind you.

Today I listened to some random albums that I bought cheap on vinyl, not knowing for certain if I'd like them. Turns out I did so perhaps I should buy some 70s Elton albums on vinyl as I'll probably find I like them.

Crocodile Rock is certainly very good song.

To be fair, that song was the first song on the EP The Thom Bell Sessions, released two years after they were recorded and I don't believe it charted.

Therefore I wouldn't expect a UK radio station to play it as they are obsessed with singles that charted or are newly released. Sometimes they vary it in the evening with non singles, if your lucky!
