Do you work for the Network Rail press office? What if you've only got a quid?

They have change machines so it shouldn't matter what you have. The point is, you'll now need to spend not far off double.

To be honest, they should also take contactless payment cards (heck, even credit/debit cards - with a suitable fixed rate negotiated with a bank on account of the low fee).

In all seriousness, central London ones should certainly allow for Oyster to be used as the payment method.

Wasn't that a plan, which would have extended to making small payments with vending machines and local shops - but halted when there were issues with the financial regulations or something?

The worst railway station toilets I have used (In recent memory) are probably the ones on platform 2/3 at Newport.

The best ones I've used, I would say possibly Banbury station.

The new accessible toilets in a GWR Turbo? Oh, wait!
Is that the train where all the toilets were not working but the guard didn't feel the need to inform the passengers so they could use the Gatwick Airport facilties before the train left! And the guard did seem to know they had been looked out when I asked. Said they would probably get dealt with at Reading. Good job I wasn't going to Reading.

I was on the train 10 minutes before it left but by the time I knew all the loos weren't working, we'd left. So I had to sit uncomfortably until Guildford. Made it to Guildford though. Being a Sunday and with a friend, I didn't feel like getting off the train at say Dorking, walking to the other station and then, back again and waiting the rest of the hour for the next service.

Nit sure what I'd have done if going to Reading. I know they sometimes hold the train at Guildford in such situations but I can't guarantee to be that quick always.

I've never used the ones at Wigan North Western or Wallgate oddly enough. Southport toilets are fine. The most outstanding toilets imho are Gatwick Airport's. Yes it's not in the station but it's within the greater complex. Not a big fan of turnstile operated ones as they seem to be most dirty but I guess they have the most usage.

No I had never used North Westerns toilets in all the years using the station until recently either, they were actually pretty well maintained and clean, like those in a decent gastro pub. I understand they were refurbished at the same time as the rest of the station lower floor a couple of years ago.

Wallgates toilets are horrible though, they have ultraviolet lighting to prevent drug taking and there is always a flooded floor.

The gents toilets at Clapham Junction tonight have a massive queue. The ladies don't.

I don't know if this is the case every Saturday afternoon after the football and if so perhaps Saturday travellers don't bring in enough money to justify additional loos.

The Army V Navy rugby match at Twickenham probably explains it. I know I've alighted at CLJ to use the facilities when travelling back from Twickenham.

Nice to see free toilets at the end of the Metropolitan Line (having paid my first visit to Chesham today)

Is there a reason St Pancras International has free toilets whereas at most other London termini you have to pay. I seem to remember Cannon Street is also free (last time i went in 2015).

Not visited them all so could be wrong.

I've not used the facilities at Chesham, which I suspect are probably OK given what I remember to be the overall upkeep of the place, but I wouldn't pay for most Tube station toilets (where they exist) - unfortunately, from what I've found, most of them are decrepit hovels with the aesthetics of a mound of ballast. In fact I have quite possibly had better experiences of going to the loo on or near actual ballast. I think one of the worst I ever found was Leytonstone, though I could be blotting out other memories.

Worse station toilet I used to use was the now thankfully demolished ones on p 3/4 at London Bridge. I reckon when the contractors knocked them down some sort of nuclear waste suits were required!

Cardiff Central has no toilets outside of the barriers. You would think that it would be in the railways interests to have modern toilets available at stations in order to reduce the number of people who are using toilets on the trains. It is also crazy to charge a fee to use toilets. Who wants to have to go searching for 30p when they are busting?

I note that on the trains, people tend to head for the disabled toilet as it is bigger.

That 30p is blooming annoying, I wish they'd accept contactless / smart travel cards.

some of you are such wet blankets. Just wash your hands after you use the toilet.
Which doesn't help when you've got to go through turnstiles to get out - Manchester Piccadilly for instance - but being a lanky bugger my hands tend to be well above them so I just push them with my legs...

This posting is repetitious but here's a challenge. Why are airport toilets (outside departure area or inside) free of charge, clean and supervised and large station ones not?

Preston, Nottingham (platforms only), and London St Pancras are all free.

There were no gents toilets on 3/4, only ladies, after the IRA blew them up 20 years ago

The gents on 1/2 and 5/6 were unpleasant, but better than nothing!

I think that for men, where full toilet facilities are too expensive or impractical, maybe some sort of return to the concept of the continental "****oir" might be appropriate, much like the one in Nouvion in the series 'Allo Allo'.

I have a bugbear about the "New" East Croydon toilets.... and how building them on the cheap is never a good idea.

Locks are coming off the cubicle doors, the smell is very unpleasant, there is now a nice "crust" of what ever it is forming on the cheap lino flooring beneath every urinal...... a gentlemans aim and lack of cleaning is too blame for that one.......

Ridiculously unpleasent for anyone especially visitors.

According to the piece of paper stuck behind the entrance door, it is "checked" twice a day.....

.....THEY SHOULD BE CLEANED HOURLY!!!!!!!!!!

Clapham Junction toliets equally horrible.

Used the "facilities" at Euston this morning, and at least 5 of the cubicles were blocked or otherwise in unusable condition. Unacceptable.

To be honest, I tend towards the idea that, with modern views being what they are, rather than having a men's and a women's toilet, it would be better to have one room with urinals and one unisex room with cubicles, but with proper full-height doors so women would not feel threatened by men up to no good.

With full height doors and no urinals in the latter room (and thus no chance it could see things it shouldn't), it might be feasible to cover it with CCTV outside the cubicles, thus providing additional protection against misuse.

How many station bogs are still lit by blue lights?

Lincoln station gents had blue lights to make it difficult for junkies to find their veins but has since reverted to using white lights.

Apparently ineffective as it didn't stop them finding a vein as they just marked it with pen before going in.

thinking about it these are the only ones on LU Iv ever used and I was maybe lucky as the cleaner was still in doing them. Are they usually bad then? Got to say given how high TFL Standards often are Im amazed to hear so many reports of their facillities being poor

Toilets are notoriously difficult to keep in good condition (Leeds and Euston suggest that charging doesn't necessarily solve the problem) so I'd expect toilets at TFL stations to become even more of a rarity.
