Or they could just save the money and give the engines more power which they might need meaning people don't complain when they don't work maybe? I don't see the need. No other operator of 158/9s in the UK provides sockets - including SWT. EMT don't even have sockets in their HSTs!

I see many people on Liverpool-Norwich using laptops and the like

Make sure they are charged then

it's not a moan for no reason thing, it's a moan for pi$$ poor management! and besides, I'm allowed to think that it's not very good.

How is it **** poor management? EMT aren't getting any more units. This is the best they can do. So stop moaning.

Nothing stopping them just fitting them to the table seats, 4 tables per vehicle, 2 vehicles per unit, 8 sockets.

Besides, surely the new automated handwashing facilities in the toilets take about as much power as a few sockets?

Nowhere did EMT say they were going to add them, why did you expect to find sockets?

Just a note that I seen 158783 on an early morning Nottingham-Liverpool run today. (one of the only ones to run from Nottingham-Liverpool due to the Chesterfield-Sheffield line closure)

It looked really cool in East Midlands Trains livery, a lot nicer than the South West Trains 158s and a world apart from the grotty examples we have now. Cant wait till the refurb is complete. I won't actually mind going on a Liverpool-Nowich train then!

make me. as said, I'm entitled to an opinion, so are you.

Agreed!
But sadly, you're not allowed to contradict Loader's opinion, as he's always right.

Miles, would you rather stand up or have a seat? I know which I'd pick. Even if it means less tables.

Aureol, you're disappointed that the 158 doesn't have things EMT didn't even promise.

Either way, the type of seats were perfect for getting more seats in so some things have to be made worse.

Some people are never happy.

Enough bitching people! Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if you don't agree with it. Class 313, if you felt particularly against something that somebody has said, the way to bring down their argument is by producing a sound counter-argument, as opposed to simply flaming them. The forum is all about debate, not taking people apart through harsh words. Oh, and also, no text speak please? Thanks all.

I wasn't flaming anyone. All I said was its the best EMT can do yet apparently that's **** poor management! Even though the DfT wont allow EMT to get more units. Again it must be all EMTs fault.

But sulzer25 can moan if he likes, even if it is unfounded.

Taking off my moderator cap, I totally agree that EMT are only doing their best with what are terrible resources, in a similar way to XC and their unpopular removal of the shop just to create a few extra seats.

It's a shame that there's no at seat power supply, even if it would be on just a few seats (which is obviously possible). It seems silly that the middle units went to Northern - the need is quite clearly there on Norwich - Liverpool.

I just hope EMT have the good sense to leave these units off the Robin Hood Line!

I hope the 'big N' (Northern Spirit??) trains are done last, that bizarre mix of liveries and branding makes me laugh every time I see it, and they're not half bad inside.

Does anybody know if the overhead luggage rack has been replaced? They're the last remnants of Regional Railways on most of the trains AFAIK (with the two tonal blue).

I think they may have been replaced, unfortunately :(
Happy to be corrected if wrong, though I have seen them for myself

And now you're unhappy that EMT have replaced something that is a good few years old.

Can't please everyone can you.

It's probably for the better they're gone. They look particularly stupid on the 'big N' trains with the faux panelling effect inside.

He was just talking about luggage racks being replaced. Not really sure it's a case of overcrowding.

WOW...Lots of comment here since my last bit.......

INFORMED SOURCE says.....

The overhead luggare racks have only been repainted and are the same as those before refurb.

Number of seats increase to meet DfT requirements of franchise...Not an EMT poor management decision.

Number of vehicles in train was a DftT decision, not poor EMT managemenr.

Power to the MHU (hygiene unit in toilet) has not increased electrical capacity. Water is heated by coolant and hand drier is actually more efficient.

Power Sockets would overpower the capability of the alternator....not the engine.

LED lighting makes the unit more efficient and cost effective as well as being more "green".

Delta Rail are providing a good service to EMT

The headlight replacement is to a BMAC one which is brighter and more efficient.

The Porterbrook units will have Liebherr Air con fitted when they are refurbished, but the ex Alpha Line units (Angel) will not have the air can renewed as they were new only a few years ago.

The seats meet all the latest Group Standards and are the SAME as FGW and ScotRail.

I welcome all the comments and will pass them on to INFORMED SOURCE.

Power sockets, even if in limited quanitites are possible, the 'big N' (ex-First Trans Peak Express??) units demonstrate this. It's a shame that these will be lost from future refurbs.

Is there an information display on board?

Note the other posts in the thread... ;)

don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming EMT, I'm not the usual ranting commuter who doesn't think before taking it out on EMT and their staff, I mean that it's bad that they have to undertake such action!

The refurbed unit was not in service when I saw it today, it was coupled to 158881 (a SWT unit) and shunting around Derby Etches Park. I travelled on 158882 to stoke on Trent (yes Baggy I finally got one after a year!) and they are very nice (well, I was in the first class area) but haven't been on the EMT refurb so can't comment.

I think most of us knew this all along. The DfT's meddling on all franchises post-Greater Western is an absolute nightmare. And to think I thought it couldn't get much worse than Greater Anglia!

Heard on another forum that six EMT 158's failed in one day alone with 153's acting has replacements. Truly shocking reliability:roll:

881 brought 783 back to notts where its still meant to be due to an "electrical flashover"

It didn't have an electrical failure, its being assessed after it was involved in an operating incident a week or so ago.
