Another unit coming back down from Ely again today, 5O86. Not sure what they're doing!

Add: Just saw them pass Brentford from train I was in, didn't quite catch numbers properly, it was a 37, probably 884, and I think I saw 2418 and 20? It was a bit of a blur, if anyone sees them can confirm? ;)

Saw a hauled 442 at Brookwood on the slows heading south about 12:45 but didn't get a chance to catch anything more.

37884 is hauling 442418 and 442420 on 5O86.

Thanks for confirming, I was right then! All I saw was a blurred 18 and 20 at the unit join. ;)

In all seriousness tho, I wonder what they're doing? That's at least twice that I know of that they've brought units back down.

ADD:
5L46 Eastleigh - Ely cancelled today (19th), reason shows as "traction eqpt problem".

I wonder if the class 442's that are currently being used on the services to Eastbourne are having issues, so units are being brought back down to have 3rd gear equipment placed back on them to replace units that are in service?

Look what was hauling 5L46 to Ely today! DCR's 31452.
It appears 37884 was having some trouble just before it got to Eastleigh with Tuesday's haul, which obviously resulted in Wednesday's run to Ely being cancelled, and rescheduled for today once the 31 was organised. 37884 came past this morning on 0Z56 to Leicester L.I.P., presumably they want to try and get it fixed by Sunday as it's booked on their 37 railtour.

Sorry lighting was poor, it was the best I could do at short notice.

Has 442 411 (the unit in which there was a fatality on in August) been withdrawn or is she still going?

Indeed, I saw this at Gordon Hill. Very surprised to see 31452 doing the honours :-P The unit was 442405 for anyone who is interested :)

Not strictly relevant, but does anyone know what today's 5X89 was? It was a 66 hauling an EMU between 2 green barrier wagons. I thought it was another 442 at first but looking at the path makes me suspect it was a 465. I didn't get a good look at it so I don't know for sure.

Adam :)

You're right it probably was a 465, they're part of the southeastern refurbishment programme. Also I believe the ROG 37s have been taking the 375s up, usually from Ramsgate to Derby Litchurch Lane.

37884 was taken back north behind a 56... not sure which one though - it ran south LE one day and then returned with 37884 the following morning

ROG have released details of a tour from King's Cross to the MNR using one of the 442s at Ely as hauled stock on December 30th, details at http://www.vintagetrains.co.uk/rail-operations-group-one-last-task/

As I said on this thread some months ago, "So there you have it, the future of 442s is on charters."

They said they have requested to run via the Hertford loop, but then include Potters Bar as a calling point..... Something doesn't seem right there. You are right, 442s are perfect for charter stock as they are basically power door mark 3s. Maybe a repaint into NSE livery would be too much to ask :-P

How compatible is a 442 with 47s or Blue Star locos? I know they can run in multiple with 73s and 33s. 2x 442s with a push-pul fitted 47 or something would seem like a much better alternative than the T&T Mark 2 stock currently used on many charters.

Back into NSE livery would be nice. As for the push pull, I have been informed it wouldn't be a difficult job to equip the 442s for it, though that has been argued on here somewhat.

if you're permanently using 442s as hauled stock you either want to ditch the motor car, or rip out the traction equipment and give it trailer bogies. Compared to the non driving trailers that carriage is lugging around another 20 tonnes

The latest issue of Rail says that Angel Trains is looking to refurbishment for future use. I imagine sandwiched between two class 43s while the trailers are refurbished for Scotrail. Oh, with 3rd rail to help over the summits to Inverness...

Yes, I know it is a mag for spotters...

push pull with a couple of GBRF 73s for peak time London Bridge to Uckfield services to free up 171s for AShford to Hastings ;)

Aside the joke that is, won't really help between Ashford and Hastings as platform lengths and single track mean two cars is generally best bet down there.

I hear though that most service are very busy and almost crush like during the summer months. Really 3 cars wouldve been perfect

But the platforms generally aren't that long. Four cars that are occasionally used on Saturdays have to use SDO a lot. Pointless using trains to long when your trying to deal with crowds. End up benefitting a lot less than you think. It's need a proper upgrade that's unaffordable under current rules.

Seen not long ago pulling into Brighton station around 19.20. Not the greatest photo. Then three different classes classes lined up. The closest one is branded Gatwick Express and does stop there but it isn't an express service.

The biggest rumour with some substance is for GWR on their loco hauled services between Cardiff and Taunton.

Mind you a 5 car Mk.3 rake with a class 67 Push/Pull ability, you would need to fit SDO to the vehicles for short platforms.

I'd imagine that the motor coach is likely to be removed from the formation.
