The three car 195's in the medium term are probably destined for the Penistone, Pontefract, Dearne Valley, South Fylde, East Lancs, Esk Valley and Yorkshire Coast lines as these lines won't be electrified for a fair while yet.

I wouldn't put money on that more likely they will be working most of the Northern Connect routes that they start out on in 15 years time.

the 07:15 to Wigan raced through to the bewilderment of some regular commuters, acting effectively as a one-coach train since the rear coach was in darkness.

and the later 07:41 to Clitheroe.

Although I believe that a Hazel Grove to Piccadilly service called additionally at HC and Levenshulme this morning, however, if it's the one I'm thinking of, that's only 2 coaches also!)

I was on the 07:15 you mentioned, but boarded at New Mills Newtown. The rear coach of the two-car set had engine failure, probably due to low coolant. It was decided to make the train express to Manchester once it got to Stockport, therefore missing out on Heaton Chapel and Levensulme. The train then went on to Oxford Road where a fitter assessed if it was able to continue to Clithero, but I don't know if it did.

This is why a later service from Hazel Grove called additionally at Heaton Chapel and Levensulme.

Funny really as I'd made my way to New Mills Newtown from New Mills Central because the line to Manchester from there was blocked by a stranded freight train at Strines.

Wrong thread, I know, but I'm just answering a query.

I see that 150275 is now showing as serviceable although not where it currently is. Last time I looked a couple of weeks ago it was still under repair at Barclays Kilmarnock.

Wasn't quite sure which thread to post this in, but this morning, at Heaton Chapel, the 07:15 to Wigan raced through to the bewilderment of some regular commuters, acting effectively as a one-coach train since the rear coach was in darkness

According to RTT service departed Stockport 19 minutes late, missed out Heaton Chapel and Levenshulme and terminated short at Piccadilly due to a train fault.

My question most relevant to this thread is; is there any news on when Northern will be getting cascaded Sprinters from other operators

September 2017 was supposed to be when the first GWR 150s arrived but it's been reported they have been delayed by 9 months.

On a side note, I hope that this and the later 07:41 to Clitheroe (both of which originate in Buxton) become 4 cars this year, as at least with 3 remaining functioning coaches, it avoids the need to have to skip vital station calls (Although I believe that a Hazel Grove to Piccadilly service called additionally at HC and Levenshulme this morning, however, if it's the one I'm thinking of, that's only 2 coaches also!)

The next recast (which should have happened this December but will probably now happen in May 2018) will see 4tph to Hazel Grove (2 continuing beyond Hazel Grove) and 2 (Northern) tph to Macclesfield (1 continuing to Stoke) so I would hope the recast sees the end of DMUs stopping at Heaton Chapel and Levenshulme with there being plenty of longer EMUs with faster acceleration which can stop at those stations.

I very much doubt services will be strengthened just in case the lights fail in one carriage! Northern have some 2 car Sprinter services so full that if a Pacer fills in they leave passengers behind for an hour on the platform - so passengers waiting an extra 15 minutes at Heaton Chapel on one day won't exactly be seen as a problem in comparison.

A tad underwhelming really, it would've been nice if they'd gone down to a 2+2 arrangement, but at least it looks better for a repaint.

No tables, no carpet, more 3+2 seating, no sockets (?), no air conditioning. No real changes at all, just paint, lino and seat covers. The opposite of transformation.

Seems again like the 158 this is not a full spec refurb.

At the very least, a switch to the "class 333" layout (the 3s in bays only, 2s mostly airline) would've helped. The window seats on the airline 3s are a nightmare to get into and end up being unoccupied most of the time.

How likely is it that like the 158, a more comprehensive refurbishment is planned later? I'm not holding my breath...

And people thought the 158 refurb was bad.

In addition waiting a year for all that is pretty disappointing.

I think 150275 definitely looks better than it did, that's for sure. I thought 158752 was decent when I went on it late last year, but as Alex Hynes said neither unit is the finished product yet, so I will reserve my final judgement until then. Hopefully 155346 and 158756 will be back soon too.

The post refurbishment train capacities in the franchise spec imply 3+2 seating will remain on units where it already exists except around the accessible toilet.

I think we knew air conditioning wouldn't happen but it's disappointing the old leaky windows seem to remain. I wonder if any work has been done to them.

Does it have LED lighting, a PIS or wifi? Those 3 things will have to be included on all Northern trains by 2020.

Don't think the picture quality helps but it looks awful.. Northern had the opportunity with these refurbished to really throw down the gauntlet of what the new franchise will bring and have even said they will all be refurbished to "as new" standard and that 150 looks like nothing more than a link of paint and some new search covers.

Why oh why have they not done something with the hopper windows and got rid of the dirt traps that are the metal surrounds that stop them opening too far.

Sorry northern but you've failed miserably here.

I'm sorry but what the heck do you expect? The 150's are many meant for shorter distance commuter and stopping services, with 195's and 158's taking over the longer distance/Connect services so looks perfectly reasonable to me, Air-Con was never on the agenda for 150's, and lino makes much more sense for stopping services, as for 3+2 versus 2+2 that's more debatable of more seats verses more standing, but obviously its likely to be cheaper to leave the 3+2.

Its not as if the 150s were any good though ?

They probably looked as crap as they do now , even in 1984

Anyone have any pictures of them in 1984 ( from the inside ) ?

Then we could see just how much , if any change there is from 1984

No your right they are not. But for me, as I said, Northern have missed a trick here and just accepted it rather than using the opportunity to show what they can do with them.

atw's interior are a lot better than this.. don't now why but I just expected northern to come up with something new and interesting..

The more I see that livery the more I dislike it. It looks unfinished and cheap.

Looks like they've installed a much too big Northern logo. That and the other clutter on the side makes this one look particularly bad.

I assume one of these (was it 009?) is still the Neville Hill Christmas Tree?

Something similar to the style of GWR or ATW wouldn't go amiss.

GWR tend to put 150's on some quite long distance routes so 2+2 with tables is probably not unreasonable, where as Northern will have 195's 158's 170's and even 156's for that.

I will reserve judgement until I see the final form of 158 refurbishment. I think its been obvious for a while that the refurbishment was never going to be that great for non 158 stock, but at least if the interior looks reasonably smart, clean and tidy it will be an improvement lets hope it stays that way.

When the FNW sets were refurbished they were used on most Buxton to Blackpool services and also sometimes Manchester to Llandudno/Holyhead yet 3+2 seating was retained.
