So what I need to do is buy 2 x S&C rovers and ask the booking office to book me some seats at the same time?

Sorry for the thickness but this doesn't seem to have been well briefed

Thanks for confirming this, I was curious if normal rules regarding staff travel would apply - I was assuming that they would....

Even getting information about Northern Friends and Family vouchers has been difficult, though apparently they can also be used.

....Yes. I had no bother picking up reservations with my staff pass at lunchtime, so priv rate tickets should be the same....

You had no problem getting them does not mean it is intended for you to be allowed one. Not all staff will have seen the briefing, especially those not employed by Northern.

....If you have a seat reservation then presumably you cannot possibly be asked to give up your seat, as you hold the only valid reservation for it. Rail staff giving up their seats presumably only applies to the unreserved portion of the train, under which scenario I have no idea.

I can only answer for what I know, and to be honest, in this case, it really isn't much. Public rate with a reservation, no problem, even for staff. It is not intended for staff using free travel to get reservations so I assume they'll be expected to get off the train and wait for the next one (no standing on the train). Anything else may depend on who you encounter.

Should be interesting to find out then, I'd be fascinated to know for certain. Though if they really want to treat it as a regular service, then as I hold a reservation I see no reason for them not to let me on as usual. :p

Just got tickets from Potters Bar so they are probably at all stations now.

I queried this too. I have a pass with boxes and I showed the ticket office clerk. He said if I date a box on the day and show my reservation they will accept it. As Northern are running these as scheduled services which currently have no restrictions to ATOC Priv Passes, he foresaw no problems.

I don't know how many seats are in a carriage, I'm sure someone does. Say theres 300 seats per train that's 3600 seats over the 3 days. I'm sure most people will be doing returns, myself included, but there'll probably be a lot who do singles, coming back on a 158 due to timings etc. Surely the amount of seats spread over the three days mean a few TOC passes won't be an issue, especially with reservations.

Just booked day return online with Northern from Skipton to Appleby on the Thurs 16th, out 1044 return any train ( dont mind returning on DMU ) for £11.70 (senior railcard) and I get a window seat in coach C .!!!! Bit fiddly and time consuming but got there in the end !!

Will prob drive from Preston the 40 odd miles to Skipton . Yes I know parking's not easy at Skipton , been there before.

Nowhere near enough to a Pacer :(
Subject to getting reservations sorted etc my intended route is Edinburgh Carlisle Appleby Skipton Leeds York Edinburgh on the 16th using the afternoon train x Appleby. Am I right in thinking its now 14:57 not 15:07?

This was a bit of a whirlwind! Luckily I was able to visit an excellent local ticket office who made me some reservations :D :D So thanks a lot to them.

How much is the fare as different websites give me different prices Northern is giving me £68 return for two adults which seems strong.

With a bit of luck Leyland ticket office will issue reservations without a ticket today. :)

Are you looking down the page? Below the full fares are the lower fares i.e. Off peak. I know we paid just under £30 for an adult and a railcard. To be fair if you consider KWVR are charging £220 per person for an Oxenhope/Carlisle return behind the Scotsman a couple of months later when the full line reopens I consider that extremely fair, especially as this run covers off most of the best bits anyway. Thank you Northern.

Purely for the Skipton - Appleby stretch, an Off Peak Day Return is £17.70 per person, without a railcard discount. This is the first return ticket that the Northern Rail website offers you. To get £68 for two adults you must be looking at the £17 single tickets, when you could have a return for just 70p more..

Alternatively, a Settle & Carlisle Day Ranger can be bought for £15 from any staffed booking office, which is valid all day, on as many trains as you wish, between Leeds, Bradford, Armathwaite and Carlisle.

Yes, unless solid evidence is provided to the contrary, I will assume that there shouldn't be an issue. I'd hope not be left in the lurch having to rush to buy a full fare ticket at a no doubt very busy Skipton with perhaps fifteen minutes to spare before the train departs!

Each carriage seats 64. Assuming that there'll be a brake and/or buffet carriage included in the rake, each train can probably be expected to field around 400 seats.

I reserved a seat on the 14:57 from Appleby on the 16th, 10:44 from Skipton appears to be full. Will turn up early and hope I think.

Just tried getting reservations and the Skipton - Appleby - Skipton section is fully reserved for all 3 days. 4 coaches are reservable and 3 are non reservable. From the brief given out by Northern all free staff travel may be asked to give up their seat to paying passengers

I think it'll be worth buying a ticket then for staff, rather than risk losing out. If it makes enough, maybe they'll do it again.

It would be good if they did do it again. I didn't go this time as I decided in the end I couldn't afford to spent £115-£200 for a day or two days travel and hotel stays. Another time maybe.

There are still some seats left on 8.25 from Appleby on the 16th, but 10.44 from Skipton every day was full. Managed to book through Northern website. I would have preferred to do Skipton - Appleby. I note there is an early departure from Leeds arriving about 7.30 in Appleby, Not sure if thats going to help, or if I will bite the bullet and drive straight to Appleby from home.

Not sure about getting back, may have to wait for 11.26 non steam service. Not bothered, as with a senior railcard it was £13.90 which I reckon is good value.

Anyone else booked on the 08.25, 16-Feb-17 from Appleby from the East Yorkshire/Yorkshire Coast area? If so are you up for sharing transport to Appleby to make the 08.25

From what I've read on here I suspect crowd control measures will be put in place at Skipton, and once the unreserved section is considered to be full, you won't get on the platform.

I think I've missed my chance then, I'm shocked all the reservations have gone so quickly :(:o

Really? It was a forgone conclusion surely for all sorts of reasons, not least financial. Many locals watch the special charters knowing their chance of affording a trip is slim. At under£18 return for 3 hrs it makes it possible.

I'm also going to be having to take my chances on the unreserved coaches, on the 15th - I'm arriving on the X43 bus, but am torn between going for the 08:40 or the 09:35 arrival.

It depends on whether it's first come first served at the ticket office on the day or stand in a queue. Perhaps someone on here can enlighten you/us on the process to access the unallocated seats and are they leaving some for the people who may or may not get on at the intermediate stops?

I am lucky to have my reservations but I know others who don't and are confused about the turn up on the day option in the light of no standing available.
