Panic over for me, received the invite to the assessment day by email today. Punching the air at this early stage! Not sure what I'll be like if I get to the end ??????
Fingers crossed for everyone still waiting.

Morning all, anybody out there who can give me a heads up on what to expect on my GTR 14/03 assessment day. I don’t know anybody who has done done one that could advise what the format is, what tests will I be required to do, how they assess you, is there is an interview on the day or is this conducted another time etc.
Had a look online, the advice seems to vary for TOC to TOC. Are there any programmes out there to purchase that will help me prepare for the GTR assessment ? Any advice would be much appreciated. Regards Herms

Hi Herms.

I recently attended the assessment day. There were 5 of us, it looked like it was setup for a maximum of about 10.

We got going quickly with the Group Bourdon test and then the memory exercises. Those that didn't pass that were sent home at that stage. We then want on to do the listening and phonebook tests followed by the technical gauge reading tests. At this stage you can get sent home if you do not pass.

After lunch we wrote answers for the interview questions which they will later ask you to expand on, followed by the comic strip report writing exercise. These two tests are not pass or fail. We then proceeded with the computer tests which include a 30 minute concentration test, coordination test and a situational awareness test.

We were then told if we passed or failed. We were told interviews would take place on another date and that it could take a month to hear from them. I'm not sure if this would be the case for every assessment day.

how did you find the hazard perception test? was it as hard as expected? was the situational awareness test train related or a wide range of issues? how did you find those?

The vigilance test was easier than I expected. It's easier on screen than through the practice materials they send.

SJT was railway related as far as I can remember. It's not assessed but used by the psychologists somehow for your MMI.

Yeah I agree, it was easier than the test materials.

Choochoo what stage are you at? Have you had your MMI?

Congratulations, i've just had the DMI, just waiting to hear the result from that. Was your application for GTR/1403 for the Ashford depot or was it a previous one?

Thanks, not 1403, earlier.

PM if you need any advice/tips

Cheers JME Bud, thanks for your reply very helpful. Just found out that they send a load of info out about the day once you book the assessment.
Regards Herm. Good luck.

Good luck everyone. Does anyone know if we will be having an interview on the same day? I'm guessing it's based at Ashford as we need to live within a hour there. Do they have a depot there?

I wouldn't worry about it being a career change. At this stage you require no knowledge of the railway, they are purely measuring your aptitude to do the job.

When you go to your driver interview you will need to do some background studying of Govia and GTR. Your DMI will be on another day, at one of the depots.

I only had to do the 1 assessment (DFFT) at Croydon as I'd already passed the others and the MMI with another TOC.
One of the guys who was sitting all of the assessments the same day (he passed and now has job offer :D) did the MMI at a later stage.
If you pass the assessments you then do the DMI (I applied for Gillingham, he applied for Ashford I think), we both had our DMI at Blackfriairs.
He subsequently passed the DMI then had to do the MMI a week or so later back in Croydon.
Give it your best mate, good luck!

Thanks for everyone's help. With the attention tests (crossing out lower case b) etc are you required to put the total crossed out at the end of the row during the time or is it totalled up after the minute? Thank you

The example you've been given is similar only to the test you'll be doing, you need to make yourself familiar with the Group Bourdon test

Are there people still out there waiting to hear from GTR about their application? I am checking my emails daily but no news, meanwhile others seem to be going to assessments and being offered positions? (Well done guys :) ) I still hold out hope, but the outlook feels bleak and if that is the case I am surprised I have not been told 'Thanks, but no thanks' by now?
