uBlock origin is a great adblocker. The non-origin uBlock which you linked to went to hell. I believe they're trying to get it back up to scratch, but it's got massively fewer users right now.

Spot on! I did a quick search last to be helpful and I was intending to link to uBlock Origin. I've replaced the link in my post with the Wikipedia page as uBlock Origin only has a github page.

The extensions for Chrome and Firefox are in their respective "stores".

Interesting... Google Chrome is a google product and if its promoting ad blocking through its own browser it would be interesting to see how it reacts with Google Adsense users
I assume it will take the same policy as ABP and let through "nice" advertising from responsible ad-brokers, such as... Google Adsense. I am interested to see what turns up. Restricting ads to just theirs would probably be illegal, so presumably they'll go wider than that. Also, while Google are generally better than some of the smaller brokers, I think they've had dodgy ads through Adsense and Doubleclick in the past.

From what I understand, they'll basically be allowing ads that aren't annoying and will need to follow a set of rules. It's to get people to stop using ad blockers purely because ads get in the way and can cause issues loading the page. I'm happy to have ads but have to use an ad blocker just to have a half decent browsing experience.

What annoys me is when local newspaper sites are covered with advertising, including adverts for many very dubious sites and then they pay for ad blocker software to put up a message implying you're depriving an essential local business of it's advertising, when the local paper is actually owned by a large multi-national company.

They sure have. Given the size of Google, they've recently dropped the ball on policing their own services, allowing very dodgy ads through and of course the recent fuss over YouTube videos (which has actually been going on for ages, but only hit the media recently because of the specific nature of that video).

I don't think they ever did. If you google for the name of the charity that I work for, the first six results are all for profit-making companies who will charge you £50 a month for the same service we offer for free.

It's the same on Google Play. I've lost track of the number of pop-ups and pop-unders that, when browsing on a mobile, redirect to a Google Play app for either a dating or a gambling app. Or Crushed Candy Farmyard Wars.

Mostly the really dodgy stuff seems to come from local newspaper websites, it has to be said. But everyone seems to have link after link of clickbait dross at the end of every article. Trust me, I really will believe what Melissa Joan Hart looks like these days.

I see it as a power play by google to cement their power in the monetization and advertising world - Chrome is currently the most popular browser and including an adblocker in their browser makes them a gatekeeper to anyone who wants to show ads to chrome users. They are already threatening advertisers with being blocked if they don't play ball - It is not inconceivable that, in some point, google will hike prices, make guidelines more strict (eg no adverts for competitors) or both. I would much prefer an independent body with users' best interests (I'd suggest the EFF) maintain an ad blocker

Eh, Google acts in its own self-interest most of all. That video brought a lot of people onto youtube and, in turn, brought in a lot of ad money for Google (and also for the creator as a side effect). Viewing figures roughly fit to exponential decay - a lot of views at first which quickly decline unless external forces are involved. When Google demonitize the video after a couple of days the vast amount of money has already been earned - and apologies cost nothing so those millions stay where they are. It's quite telling how Google are treating their youtube creators (probably abusing their dominant position) - search for YouTube Adpocolypse

I admit it's reasonably difficult to police services provided by someone as big as google because you need to rely on bots and the DMCA didn't help

Any ideas why I'm redirected to some very dubious looking websites (screenshot attached) with popups when viewing these forums on my phone? It's a 6 month old Galaxy A3 using the default Samsung browser and I don't have problems with redirection adverts on any other website. It happens every single time I visit RailUK forums on my phone but I haven't had it happen with my ipad or laptop. The only way to get back to the forums is to hold down the back button because it uses multiple redirects. It's very annoying!
