Interesting... Google Chrome is a google product and if its promoting ad blocking through its own browser it would be interesting to see how it reacts with Google Adsense users
I see it as a power play by google to cement their power in the monetization and advertising world - Chrome is currently the most popular browser and including an adblocker in their browser makes them a gatekeeper to anyone who wants to show ads to chrome users. They are already threatening advertisers with being blocked if they don't play ball - It is not inconceivable that, in some point, google will hike prices, make guidelines more strict (eg no adverts for competitors) or both. I would much prefer an independent body with users' best interests (I'd suggest the EFF) maintain an ad blocker
They sure have. Given the size of Google, they've recently dropped the ball on policing their own services, allowing very dodgy ads through and of course the recent fuss over YouTube videos (which has actually been going on for ages, but only hit the media recently because of the specific nature of that video).
Eh, Google acts in its own self-interest most of all.
That video brought a lot of people onto youtube and, in turn, brought in a lot of ad money for Google (and also for the creator as a side effect). Viewing figures roughly fit to exponential decay - a lot of views at first which quickly decline unless external forces are involved. When Google demonitize the video after a couple of days the vast amount of money has already been earned - and apologies cost nothing so those millions stay where they are. It's quite telling how Google are treating their youtube creators (probably abusing their dominant position) - search for YouTube Adpocolypse
I admit it's reasonably difficult to police services provided by someone as big as google because you need to rely on bots and the DMCA didn't help
