They are technically the fastest trains that run solely in the UK, beating the Pendolino/220/221/HSTs etc by 15mph.

The 390's and Inter-City 225's are capable of 140mph too just don't have the track facilities the 395's have and are limited to 125mph. I'm sure Virgin's initial intention was to have 140mph on the WCML. It's a bit of a waste as the WCML and ECML are more important routes than Southeastern's HS1 route and this is the one that has higher speeds.

Not really a waste - the 395s are simply making use of existing infrastructure - on our crucially important international rail link.

Wow I wonder wether a HST has ever achieved such a speed in normal service. I know a deltic once attained 125 mph in normal service. I would have loved to have been traveling behind that.

The 395s in service run at up to 140mph therefore making them the (technically) 2nd fastest trains in use in the UK, but the fastest in terms of speed whilst in service.

Enough talking about the 395s, this thread is entitled "Worst Train Advert"!

Only if running late, they are timetabled at 126 max in normal service to reduce energy consumption. This margin will also allow them to regain lost time easily so we can expect all the usual 98% on time rubbish soon instead of speeding them up to provide as fast a service as possible .

The class 43 HST has the record for the fastest speed for a diesal locomotive I think.

Anyway back on topic and my opinion is posted earlier in this thread.

There was a "140 Club" on the GWML in the days before OTMR Blackboxes.

Other ludicrous speed attempts include the solo 4-REP that did 117 on the Tonbridge Straight to demonstrate that 3rd rail was fast enough for E*s. There was also the story of a 442 that wouldn't go above 85mph - it was infact a broken speedo and was doing around 125... How true that one is I don't know
