After the campaign last week to rename Ashchurch for Tewkesbury 'Tewkesbury Parkway' gathered pace, and Smitham likely to be renamed soon ('Coulsdon Town' is the favourite), are there any more station name changes possible, or any you feel need changing? Also, apart from St Boltophs becoming Colchester Town, are there any recently chnaged names? Thanks in advance.

Given the cost of changing the name of a station is in the tens of thousands of pounds I'd hope no money is wasted on such un-necessary extravagancies.

We are looking at adding a suffix to the station signs at Stapleton Road to advise passengers it is the station for Easton - the cost of a complete renaming was too high for FGW, Network Rail and the CRP to justify.

Another one I found was, reading through Rail from the 1990s, they wanted to rename Oxenholme Lake District to 'Kendal (Lake District)'. Obviously this never came about. :D

Last year they changed "Pokesdown" to "Pokesdown for Boscombe". So now theres always a huge annoying pause before it on the automated announcements.

I think Keynsham should be renamed: "Keynsham, spelt K - E - Y...."

(oldies only !)

Coombe in Cornwall became Coombe Junction halt, and St Keyne became St Keyne Wishing Well Halt about 2 years back.

They still wasted a similar amount on turning "Dore" station into "Dore and Totley" station.

I can understand the need to rename when something new opens (like a shopping centre/ new sports stadium...), or a similarly named one exists elsewhere but it seems a waste to change normal stations

Penrith might as well be renamed "Penrith North Lakes" the amount of times it's reffered to that in announcements (or is that an old name?)

Strange that. Apparently VT renamed it 'P... North Lakes', but the old BR signs still on the station still say 'P... North Lakes', so its been around since at least the 80s/90s. Onboard VT Voyagers, its 'P N Lakes', and on Pendos, it just 'Penrith' (dunno about TPE), and on dot matrix boards its either. Similar with Oxenholme (most of the time its got the suffix though) :D

Hi All,

One example in Merseyside is renaming Allerton Station to Liverpool South Parkway. Garston Station also became Liverpool South Parkway in a way, however that section used by Merseyrail is entirely new, a few hundred metres up the same line, where as the ex Allerton bit is the original station.

Other Merseyside ones I can think of, although renamed years ago, are renaming St Helens Shaw Street to St Helens Central, and shortening Heswall Hills to just Heswall, after the other Heswall Station on the now closed line was closed.

Cheers

A lot of stations have their signs sponsored by businesses. Maybe they should let them sponsor the whole name as well. It would cover the cost of renaming, and leave a little over for improving the station too.
Afetr all, if Arsenal play at the Emirates Stadium, why shouldnt stations have names like that too?

OK, I know the answer. Its passenger confusion. But passengers are so confused by privatisation and the multitudes of different tickets, that they still call it all "British Rail" anyway.

Well, on the same network of branches as Colchester Town/St Botolphs, but renamed much more recently are: Frinton-on-Sea and Clacton-on-Sea (formerly without the "on-Sea"s), and Walton-on-the-Naze (formerly, curiously, as both the town as well as the naze itself have a "the" in their names, "Walton-on-Naze")

NXEA also renamed, again for reasons of sound common sense, a couple of stations
on the Crouch Valley (Southminster) line: "Woodham Ferrers" became "South Woodham Ferrers" (which makes sense, given that is where the station is, even if the town didn't exist when the station was opened, and so shared a name with a village further away), while "Fambridge" became "North Fambridge" - a very good move, as there is no place (nor now a bridge) called Fambridge, and a relatively substantial distance by road is necessary to cross the Crouch to get from North Fambridge, where the station is, to the entirely separate village of South Fambridge.

Apart from Colchester Town, I think all of these renamings took place in 2007/08 or so

I think Birchington in Kent gained the 'on-Sea' suffix along with another in the past few years.

Box Hill & Westhumble had it's name changed slightly in the mid 2000's. It was Boxhill and Westhumble before that.

It's name has been changed five times since the 1800's I believe.

What, so they replaced an ampersand with the word instead?

In 2006 it was changed from Box Hill & Westhumble to Boxhill & Westhumble due to there being inconstancies.

Dunbridge became Mottisfont and Dunbridge a few years ago.

I don't think Pokesdown is formally name changed - announcements are, but it is still just Pokesdown as far as NR are concerned. Same as Alnmouth (for Alnwick) - still just Alnmouth in NRES...

When did Parkways come about (ie. Didcot?). Soton Airport's good too: It was just Airport, then Airport Parkway, and now Soton Airport (Parkway) or something like that :D

That's an interesting question. When did "Parkways" start? What, exactly, is one? I can see why an airport may be given a Parkway name, but Horwich? Buckshaw?

Its meant to have vast car park(s), arent they? Strange on the Preston-Bolton, you will soon have 3 parkways in 6 stations: Buckshaw, horwich and Lostock :D

Prestwick was renamed Prestwick Town, when the nearby Prestwick Airport station opened

Lochside was renamed back to Lochwinnoch as part of the Ayrline electrification in the 1980s

Kirknewton (KKN) used to be Midcalder up until the 1980's.

Markinch (MNC) lost its "for Glenrothes" suffix when Glenrothes with Thornton (GLT) opened even though it is nearer to Glenrothes than GLT and it makes more sense to change there when travelling to/from the north.

Rosyth (ROS) & Carfin (CRF) both lost the "Halt" suffix in the '80s

Dalmeny has gained a "for South Queensferry" suffix even though there is no such place<( the correct name is just Queensferry - check o an OS map.

Preswick Airport became Prestwick Intl Airport, then Glasgow Prestwick Airport, didn't it?

And Marton near Middlesbrough was called Ormesby or something along those lines :D
