I'm looking forward to the Carstairs to Glasgow Central section - this will be challenging due to the large number of local services and flat junctions.

The timetable has a parting of the Red Sea for this train, and the signallers / controllers have been well briefed!

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
Fair bit of negativity on here. Why? We should be celebrating events like these - they're now so rare on our railways!

Watching the progress on RTT is good fun.

And that 'Peter somebody' as you described him was introduced as "Sir Peter Hendy, Chairman of Network Rail". He was talking to the general public, not a bunch of enthusiasts, (who would easily be able to find out that 390044 currently carries the name 'Royal Scot').
Irritatingly the interviewer ended the interview with "thanks Peter", not "that was Sir Peter.......", but apologies for not recognising his rank in the original post.

And it's for charity as well, it's not merely a speed run.

The difference of opinion is always good. I’m completely with you however, I love events like this.

Not sure of the accuracy of the route setting on OTT but according to that the signaller has set the route almost as far as Motherwell already.

Anyone hoping to catch the 14:26 from Motherwell to Dalmuir via Glasgow Central Low Level will be disappointed I expect.
Anyone who leaves that little amount of time between connections would be used to disappointment...

I'm viewing it's progress on the Railcam site diagrams, Traksy has given it the wrong headcode of 180Q, it's the correct headcode of 1Z57 on the Railcam diagrams

As we await arrival at Glasgow a thought has occured: could a 221 voyager do the same run at similar speeds/timings? It would be an interesting comparison run, and maybe an attempt at the fastest diesel between London and Glasgow.

Depends on the criteria there, I think the HST will take some beating as it was allowed to run over the speed limit and the ECML is straighter anyway.

Not similar speeds/timings, they have slower acceleration - particularly at higher speeds and more importantly there are a number of places where the lesser tilt means 221s have to run at a lower EPS limit.

There was I believe a run where an HST was specially authorised 125mph on the WCML in some places and that was before even 110mph was permitted.

I'd assumed same route, tilt permitted, 125mph max, and greens all the way! Could be a fun charity fundraiser maybe next year?

I don't know how closely the WTT timings match reality, but in normal times when the xx.23 from Euston to Birmingham calls at Watford Junction it requires extra pathing time in the following xx.30 when the former is a 221/Voyager, but not when they're both timed as Pendolinos. From this I'd say that the 221 is a bit slower.

To be fair, he isn’t bothered about stuff like this.

No. It would be several last minutes slower. Slower acceleration and slower round many of the curves.

It was interesting to read about an afternoon Voyager vice Pendolino diagram (I’m thinking 15:40 off Central for some reason) and that it was losing a few minutes to Preston every day.

Is it going to make it, can it make up time, is there a camera crew on board - wont be worth filming without a bit of jeopardy

Will be interesting to hear how defensive the approach to the buffer stops is at Glasgow Central.

The difference between the fastest & slowest drivers can be 29 seconds at my usual terminus Victoria.

RTT has it slipped to +1 on schedule, which is +2 in reality due to a 1min early departure. :s
