Due to travel on the 1852 Edinburgh - Euston as far as Preston, then on to Manchester. The Avanti website says it's still running but the eight trees on the line north of Carlisle would suggest otherwise. They are also advising folk to abandon travel north of Carlisle. I'm only going today because of the warnings about tomorrow too .

Unless I'm missing something, I can't think of any way to get south using LNER, TPE aren't an option as they go down the WCML too. No idea if there are buses or what the plan might be. Oh well, better than hitting a dirty great tree at linespeed. If, somehow, the line is clear, is there even stock at Waverley/Polmadie/Craigentinny (do 390s visit?) to run a service?

I could attempt the 1730 LNER by York but there's no ticket acceptance with TPE.

Stay safe all!
I see you've already understandably given up travelling this evening.

Avanti are hoping to run 1M20 20:06 Glasgow to Crewe and extend it to London Euston this evening, calling at Stafford, Rugby, Milton Keynes and Watford (subject to the line between Glasgow and Carlisle being re opened in time of course.)

Shame they couldn't say get you a taxi/coach etc. from Edinburgh to Carstairs and get the Pendolino to stop additionally there to pick you up. No doubt there will be others in a similar situation to you at Edinburgh.

And warning you not to travel is how they establish the contractual right to actually make you accept the consequences.
It does no such thing. Though the requirement to provide alternative transport or else accommodation is subject to the proviso that it must be reasonably practicable. Alternative transport in a severe storm could well be impracticable, but accomodation will almost always be available in some fashion.

After yesterday's significant winds, it was much calmer here today, with comparatively calmer gusts at more like 33mph. I even managed to get out for a cardio session this afternoon, which was incredibly welcome :)

It seems nuts to think that in just a few hours' time it'll be all change. As best as I can, I've prepped the garden but not moved the wheelie bins. That needs doing, after which I don't think I can prepare much more for the weather.

I'm dreading the conditions out there tomorrow, but I have to say I'm surprised not to see any panic buying in the shops today. With such a big weather event, I was expecting it to be mad but it was basically a normal Thursday! Not that I'm complaining, of course.

For everyone who has to be outside tomorrow, I wish you all good luck and here's hoping everyone keeps as safe as they can :)

I have just received a recorded message from Floodline natural resources Wales telling me severe flooding is expected and action should be taken.

It didn't say what action and I'm nor sure I have time to build an ark.

If the North and West shore tides meet in the middle of town as suggested it will be a bit messy....

Thank you :) If the legs misbehave tomorrow, like they did all morning today, then I won't be going out there. They're being weird since Tuesday, although I did really push them hard so it's perhaps no surprise. Not normally such an issue though, this many days later, but it will sort itself out soon :)

Oh nice with the time off, enjoy! Sainsburys do some nice wines, so I suspect you will be just fine :) I'd ask what you got, but that's going off-topic a bit too much

Translation: The most important thing that must happen is the thing that I want to do.

Nah, it's all a big conspiracy by Big Weather...

Don't be a sheep - get out and enjoy some ale in a pub garden that before the wind had a roof and walls.

More to do with derailing a HST at Carmont I think.

Can't really blame Scotland's attitude on this, to be fair. Carmont was awful, and it's quite clear casualties would have been *much* higher had the train not been very lightly loaded because of Covid. The fact that the bad weather triggered a piece of defective infrastructure must certainly be of concern to duty-holders, in case other such assets exist. In the medium term NR will need to regain confidence in its infrastructure, but I wouldn't expect that to happen overnight.

Llandudno, presumably?
Indeed, quite a worrying unsolicited warning to receive by phone.

Could be interesting out there tomorrow. No worries for the trains TfW have cancelled every single train and possibly for days. They haven't committed to when they will be running again.

It makes my trip to London tomorrow a little awkward (impossible) unless avanti are brave enough ti head down the coast to North Wales. They haven't cancelled as yet

I see the Reading to Gatick Airport services are cancelled tomorrow.

I wonder if Redill services were running to Gatwick Airport by now would they be terminating them short or is it more about running less trains that where they run to?

Don't take this as complete gospel but I have it on good authority that Avanti are now not running anything into or out of Wales tomorrow.

I apologise if this has been mentioned before but I keep seeing that TOCs are accepting tickets on Saturday, but there are further gales throughout the weekend. Any major work on the OHL may not be done until the winds calm down later on Sunday.

After the last big storm tfw lost quite a few trains for weeks due to storm damage, they can't afford to lose units again. I don't blame tfw for not taking any risks, plus tfw run on far more rural routes than avanti and the rural routes a lined with trees.

South Western Railway isn't saying some travel tomorrow but Great Western Railway are bow saying don't travel on some routes.

It is interesting to compare the messages from different TOCs. I wonder if those who say Do not travel will have a lower number of passengers who don't use that phrase.

I'm not saying travellers should travel, just how the messaging impacts on people declined choices.

For example, I'd expect the winds tomorrow to be as bad on Southern as they are on South Western Railway or at least the amber warning widespread enough to think if Southern has Do Not Travel then so would South Western Railway but they don't.

Thanks for your thoughts I, I live on the Somerset levels and as an ex railwayman I helped sort out the 2014 flood damage, I was also one of the orange army at Dawlish, whilst trying to sort that out I was also at Penzance dealing with the trashed lineside equipment there.
Please give a thought to the people who have to go out in atrocious weather conditions to deal with issues be that railway related or otherwise, they'll be worried about their own homes and families as well as the job in hand and their own safety. Trust me it gets scary sometimes.

Stay safe! ( and alert, I guess ) - is there a system for warnings of tidal surge flooding up there? ( I know on some places on the north sea coast they have sirens ). There are coastal flood alerts in areas I've never seen alerts before on the SW peninsula - fortunately no inland flood alert atm, because the combination would be horrendous.

Indeed. Noted that Avanti are apparently accepting affected travel tickets anytime on Saturday, Sunday or Monday.

Same with LNER, accepting tickets from tomorrow for use on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

I note that after the 19:12 Guildford to Redhill has departed tomorrow there won't be another service until 22:21. The side effect of cancelling a service route. The 22:21 is shown as running to Gatwick Airport though

The above is wrong. The journey I was looking up was Guildford to Gatwick Airport via Dorking Deepdene. If you look that up their is a gap. In the reverse no trains until 21:29. Must still be data to he uploaded.

Live radar reports of Storm Eunice seems to be deepening faster than modelled, as well as being positioned slightly further North. In simple terms, this means higher wind gusts expected. Exact positioning of the locations for the highest gusts in land is an ever changing situation. Expect further Met Office warnings/updates.

Avanti have confirmed this:
Due to the strong winds forecast with Storm Eunice, we plan to operate the following services, subject to any changes in the weather forecast. Trains to/from North Wales and Shrewsbury will not operate, as the routes are closed.
