Hopefully it will be sorted (and not just a metaphoric 'few weeks' before the trains are replaced!) - I recall being astonished at just how much nicer the LED light is when I changed the light in the room where I am now from fluorescent to LED.

Give it 2 years of wear and degradation on the LEDs and it will be worse than the fluorescents were.

(Also, count yourself lucky, they don't sound like the usual cheap LEDs)

Maybe TfL should seek donations for the new trains?

I've still got some shillings and florins that I found down the back of the sofa!

Its a shame about the signalling system, as it seems to work well (better than some of the foibles with more modern variants) and has visual signals to boot.

It’s not a bad signalling system at all, very well designed, and certainly superior (IMO) to the Thales system. But it is starting to suffer from obsolescence issues, though LU has workstreams in place to try and mitigate against this. Time will tell how successful that proves to be.

I get the feeling you've not revised your opinion of domestic LED lighting since the very first models emerged on the market. They are much much better now, definitely superior to CFLs — and I'm including my own 2-year-old batch in this assessment, inexpensively bought from Wilko when I moved into this house 2 years ago!

Nowhere near enough to a Pacer :(
Is there a separate thread for discussion of the current condition and potential future replacement and short-term maintenance and upgrades of the 72 stock and indeed perhaps another one for LED lighting as I kind of get the feeling that this discussion whilst very interesting might be classed as off-topic

It's based on designing and specifying LED lighting systems for LUL, BR and CIBSE specificationn and off for the last 8 years.
LEDs degrade. They always will until we end up with regulations that require higher efficiencies.

Apologies if ive missed it somewhere but what exactly is the refurb spec in terms of the interior, is it a flooring and seat cover job again and perhaps CCTV at last??

Central line is AC motors/traction packages, DTS (train management system), in car displays, wheelchair bays amongst other stuff, quite a bit more than just a refresh

Also should be floor corrosion repair, static converters, battery chargers, LED Lighting, body end repairs (that weren't done previously, see duct tape) and some more work de-scoped from HOPL. And yes, it should include CCTV.

For reference, last I checked 1972TS was floor repairs, wheelchair bays, new PIS (watered down DTS from 1992TS), LED Lighting, but no CCTV.

Do LEDs degrade much now? It's usually the power supply that fails, or kills the LED, or heat. I am sure that both of these issues are well known about these days, such that you have better power supplies/drivers and don't drive an LED too hard (generating heat).

I would have thought LEDs today would outlast any train they're installed on.

Surely the 1992s are the same height inside as any other normal Tube stock? I don't recall them being roomier than say the 1995/96 stock?

The stock which does have more headroom is the 2009 stock, as the Victoria line tunnels are slightly larger, and the stock was made fatter to utilise this.
1992 stock have higher internal clearance in the carriages than the 1995/1996 stock as trust me, i can walk along an entire 92 stock coach without ducking (being 6ft6) however on the 95/96 stock my head basically touches the ceiling in the middle so anything in the ceiling means i would have to bend down to avoid hitting my head on it, so the tunnels might be same size, but the stock is smaller on the inside. You say the 2009 stock has more headroom but i would have to disagree as again this is stock where my head touches the ceiling, unlike the 92 where my head is still clear of the lights in the middle of the ceiling

The first production CLIP unit 91001-92001 finally entered the new AC14 workshop in Acton Works having already undergone some modifications in another part of Acton Works.

This will now await the return from Old Dalby of the 4 AC motor units and work can start in earnest at last

Central Line test run 08.12.21

Yesterday we completed the first dynamic test run with prototype train 2 tested on the Central Line in traffic hours. This is a significant step for the Central Line Improvement Programme (CLIP). Train 2 includes replacement DTS Data Transmission System and PIS Passenger Information System replacement saloon LED lighting and saloon modifications for RVAR. PIS was isolated for this test, but future testing will include active PIS and saloon CCTV.

It’s effectively the on board train computer & associated screen(s) in the train cab.

Think of it like TCMS on the S stock and modern Mainline fleets.

An 8-car AC motor fitted train will undergo overnight testing on Friday and Saturday nights commencing 21 January, running to/from Hainault depot and shuttling between Epping and Debden

Is there any footage uploaded of it's testing yet? Would love to hear those AC motors for myself.

The motors won't sound very different. It's the three-phase inverters you'll be listening out for ;)

There are three sources of 'motor' sound....... the inverter, the motor itself, and the gearbox. The gearbox is retained, so it's noise won't change. As D365 says, the inverter noise will be different from the chopper....a variable frequency rather than the current fixed frequency. The motor noise will also change. DC motors typically make a noise from the brushes bearing on the commutator. This is eliminated from AC induction motors.
