I've always assumed that the purpose of said soft area is to protect the driver's head in the event of a collision? Though would an airbag be better?
Surely it’s for wiping your feet.

I agree, the original design couldn't be more bland and empty of styling if they tried, the new design looks quite exciting though! Each to their own, the 800-807s appear entirely bland/uninspiring to me. It looks like they put more effort into the 810.
A similar bit is on the 395s, must be a Hitachi thing.I've heard carpet was installed to prevent glare from sunlight, but why it needs to be on such a thick block I don't know. As other have said, I don't think we will ever know for certain what the carpet is for!!
I doubt it, the 395s have quite a short nose, possibly even shorter than the 810s.Do the original 80xs need a longer nose due to their 140mph capabilities (even if it's never used in service), whereas with the 810s being 125mph units, that's not needed?
I always thought that the term bullet train was in reference to the speed rather than the nose profileWhen does the length of a train nose confer the soubriquet "bullet train".
HS2 trains are always described this way, but as far as I can see, every 125mph+ train since the HST can be described this way.
TGV/ICE/Eurostar/Le Frecce/Avril etc are all "nosy" high speed trains as much as any in Japan and China.
On this basis, TPE already runs "bullet trains" with its Nova 1/2 pointy-nosed stock, and Nova 3 even has a nose at the far end to the loco.
Is the EMR 810 any less a "bullet train" than previous 80x?
I think we should be told...

I agree with you. I think it looks superb!I like the front end purely as it’s some rare variety within the sameish 80x design.
A touch of Frecciarossa 1000?I’m getting Italian high speed vibes from that one. Anything to do with the fact Hitachi took over Ansaldo Breda maybe?

Yes! That was my thought when I saw it.A touch of Frecciarossa 1000?
Am I in the minority by not being concerned by the outward appearance? In my opinion, the best outcome for these trains will be a quiet introduction.

It’s a piece of carpet to rest hands on, when stood up coupling units together.I reckon the piece of padded carpet at the foot of the windscreen is for the times when the train is stuck at a red signal for an excruciatingly long time. Or is it a fluffy dice substitute. Then I had a serious thought - perhaps a housing for an airbag ?.
If it’s the same carpet used on the floors of the unit, I trust it may well be that itchy irritable kind, so therefore, I wouldn’t want to rest my hands on it!It’s a piece of carpet to rest hands on, when stood up coupling units together.

Seen like that it makes me think of the Norwegian Railways Class 73they are giving off 395 vibes more than 80x i won’t lie
