Each to their own, the 800-807s appear entirely bland/uninspiring to me. It looks like they put more effort into the 810.
I agree, the original design couldn't be more bland and empty of styling if they tried, the new design looks quite exciting though!

I've heard carpet was installed to prevent glare from sunlight, but why it needs to be on such a thick block I don't know. As other have said, I don't think we will ever know for certain what the carpet is for!!

A similar bit is on the 395s, must be a Hitachi thing.

Do the original 80xs need a longer nose due to their 140mph capabilities (even if it's never used in service), whereas with the 810s being 125mph units, that's not needed?

I doubt it, the 395s have quite a short nose, possibly even shorter than the 810s.

When does the length of a train nose confer the soubriquet "bullet train".
HS2 trains are always described this way, but as far as I can see, every 125mph+ train since the HST can be described this way.
TGV/ICE/Eurostar/Le Frecce/Avril etc are all "nosy" high speed trains as much as any in Japan and China.
On this basis, TPE already runs "bullet trains" with its Nova 1/2 pointy-nosed stock, and Nova 3 even has a nose at the far end to the loco.
Is the EMR 810 any less a "bullet train" than previous 80x?
I think we should be told...

I always thought that the term bullet train was in reference to the speed rather than the nose profile

If you look at the profile of the original Shinkansen from which the name originated (the type in the NRM) it makes perfect sense!

In this case, they will be spending a fair bit of time around the back streets of Derby, so Bullet sounds about right.

I must admit, when I first saw the renders of the livery I was rather skeptical of it but it looks rather nice. I can’t wait to see these in service.

I'm going to reserve my judgement on the new front until I see it with the nose cone closed, but it's looking good so far.

It's certainly a more interesting roofline on those, and I quite like it over the normal 80Xs. I also like the front mounted destination screen at last - a missing feature off the other 80Xs so far.

I’m getting Italian high speed vibes from that one. Anything to do with the fact Hitachi took over Ansaldo Breda maybe?

Am I in the minority by not being concerned by the outward appearance? In my opinion, the best outcome for these trains will be a quiet introduction.

As long as they're an improvement on the 222s, then they can look at ugly as 380s as far as I'm concerned! Given the 810s are a product of Hitachi, and that I generally like the 80x fleet (LNER's Standard interior being an exception to that rule), then bring them on!

The nose of the 810s, I seriously doubt I'm going to notice apart from the occasional photo-taking of them. I'm so unfussed that I haven't even looked at that bit of the photos seen in this thread!

Given the 810s are already encouraging me to have a journey up the MML again when they're introduced, and the 222s are being avoided for anything other than short hops, I think that summarises everything I think about them so far!

I reckon the piece of padded carpet at the foot of the windscreen is for the times when the train is stuck at a red signal for an excruciatingly long time :p. Or is it a fluffy dice substitute. Then I had a serious thought - perhaps a housing for an airbag ?.

It’s a piece of carpet to rest hands on, when stood up coupling units together.

If it’s the same carpet used on the floors of the unit, I trust it may well be that itchy irritable kind, so therefore, I wouldn’t want to rest my hands on it!

The almost complete 810 looks nothing like its original artwork with the more curved 800-like yellow end, this is great as it seems constructed as a completely different product like the 395, have to say the bronze ends do look beautiful with the aubergine purple, a lovely mix there.

Sometimes product designs do evolve over time, then maybe future yet to be built 80xs (after 805 & 807) could take on a similar look to the 810 such as the headlamps, angular nose shape etc? The 810 could possibly be the template & first of a new refreshed design for the AT300 platform.
