Hi,

Thinking about a track bash / haulage over Easter weekend using an Anglia Plus One Day Rover. Unfortunately the NXEA website only seems to mention it by name, but no details of area covered. Their customer services team were also fairly useless, since they had not even heard of this ticket type and could only tell me how much it cost if I told them where I wanted to travel to ??

So I'm just wondering if anybody on the Forum has used this Rover before ? Any hints / tips of where you can get to, or what's not covered ?

Many thanks.

Coxy

Could someone please check the Fare manual and tell me if it is shown as being valid on Cross Country Trains between Cambridge and Ely?

This is because of an ongoing debta on Anglia Gen - I will (I promise) give the credit to you!

Thanks

Mark

I doubt you will get total agreement on this issue.
National Rail Conditions of Carriage said:
B. VALIDITY OF TICKETS
10. Tickets valid only in trains of particular Train Companies

The validity of a ticket may:
a) be restricted to; or
b) prohibit
travel in the trains of a particular Train Company or Train Companies. Any such restriction
or prohibition will be shown on the ticket. If you travel in a train with a ticket that is not
valid, the relevant parts of Condition 2 or 4 will apply. If you are unable to use a ticket
Is such a restriction "shown on the ticket"? If the ticket is routed "Not XC" (or similar) then it's enforceable. If not, then under the Conditions of Carriage, I don't think it's enforceable. Whether or not a passenger & XC are prepared to go to court over it, remains to be seen...

Oh, and just to pre-empt people who claim that other parts of the Conditions of Carriage over-rule that rule (), or that a secret restriction code trumps it (), I will refer you to this legislation...

The Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999
Written contracts
7. - (1) A seller or supplier shall ensure that any written term of a contract is expressed in plain, intelligible language.
(2) If there is doubt about the meaning of a written term, the interpretation which is most favourable to the consumer shall prevail but this rule shall not apply in proceedings brought under regulation 12.

I know some people will still try to claim it's not valid, but if anyone was issued a UPFN for this we will be happy to assist in writing a robust letter contesting the UPFN.

Has someone been issued a UPFN for travelling between Ely and Cambridge on XC? If so, I want to know about it, and I will assist in contesting it. So far our success rate is (as far as I know) 100% (not that I can guarantee anything!).

No - but the question was asked because the situation is unclear! I have used it on XC services many times as as others? But there are doubts in our minds!

All I can say is that if XC refuse to honour it, then I am convinced that they are in breach of the Conditions of Carriage (other opinions may vary), and if that occurs, hand over no money and instead obtain an Unpaid Fare Notice, and contact us (ie, send me a PM) for assistance in writing a robust letter, drafted by our team of fares experts (including a legal expert).

However I am glad to hear that you and others have experienced no problems :)

Whenever I use an A+ Rover and want to board (and travel on an) XC service, I have always asked the guard whether they will pass it, on one occasion I had one guard say no but the one who was taking over say yes. I have even had an XC-RPI accept the rover. (I have never actually been refused travel on their service)

I, personally don't want the hassle of a UPFN (etc), if they were to say no, I would await the next train / go somewhere else, no hard feelings. I do not carry around a copy of the NRCoC to be the person who knows more than the guard.

Thats JMHO.

There is no need to carry a copy of the NRCoC, and if you don't want to argue, accept the UPFN and challenge it later. A UPFN is probably more hassle for the guard than it is for you, anyway, especially as we are offering to assist in producing the letter.

I've used the Anglia Rover on XC a few times, and they've been perfectly fine with it.

I didn't even know it wasn't listed as valid until I read this, always used it on XC with no problems whatsoever.

I was only questioned on XC once, the guard said "This is the Birmingham train, not going to Anglia." I just told him I was changing at Ely, and like I said, he was fine with it.

Quoted from The Manual:

Anglia Plus is a family of rail passes in East Anglia offering unlimited travel within the appropriate zones on services operated by National Express East Anglia, East Midlands Trains and First Capital Connect (including travel to/from Waterbeach).

There are two basic types of Anglia Plus ticket – the Season ticket and the off-peak Ranger and Rover tickets

The Manual does not form part of the contract between TOC and customer. On the other hand, the National Rail Conditions of Carriage does. I don't particularly wish to say any more on the subject as I've said it all before ;)

Can anyone advise me if there is a East Anglia Rover? Routes required are Liverpool Street-Ipswich-Norwich? Planning a day trip for September and plan to get freight also. If anyone can advise me of any freight down that way I'd appreciate that!

From the National Rail website:

These tickets are valid for one day from 0845 Mondays to Fridays and at anytime on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays with the following exceptions:

Saxmundham 08:21 (and intermediate stations to Ipswich)
Norwich 08:23 (Sheringham service)
Sheringham 08:25 (and intermediate stations to Norwich)
Ely 08:30 (Liverpool Street via Ipswich service).
Thurston 08:30 (Ipswich service)
Elmswell 08:37 (Ipswich service)
Norwich 08.36 (Great Yarmouth service)
Norwich 08.40 (Cambridge service)
Cambridge 08.43 (Ipswich service)
Lowestoft 08.42 (Norwich service)
Ipswich 08.44 (Norwich service)
Brandon 08.44 (Norwich service)

Does that mean those services are VALID Monday to Friday, or INVALID on Saturdays?

I have been told this, but I have since forgotten. What routes does the aforememntionmed cover. I can't find a text version, and I can't view pdfs on my BB. Also, can I get Priv on the ticket?

Cheers

Priv discount on this ticket is only available at the Railcard rate (34%) so is £19.80 for the 3 in 7.

See map attached as a jpeg, converted from a pdf on the National Rail website.

Have Cross Country trains recently been removed from the validity of this ticket? Sure when I looked there were 4 TOC valid, but now the national rail website only states the three.

I don't know but my position on the matter remains the same, and the quotes form a good defence if you are challenged, and we would assist anyone who is issued a UPFN or pays a fare, in appealing it.
