Derailed freight train on Hope Valley line?

BBC Radio just reported buses running Sheffield-Manc'r / the Airport due to the reason above.

Anyone else heard anything?

DONCASTER rail passengers are facing delays of up to an hour this morning following a derailment.

Services are being disrupted after a freight train left the tracks near Edale in the Peak District.

Among the services disrupted are First TransPennine Express trains between Sheffield and Manchester Airport as well as East Midland Train services. Replacement bus services are in operation.

It was bad enough on Monday, a broken down train near New Mills Central delayed the 0747 from Chinley, ex Manchester Picc by well over half an hour, arrived in Sheffield around 40 minutes late. The 0755 from Chinley was delayed for the same reason and arrived in Picc about 25 late I think. Anyone know exactly what happened Monday?

Radio Sheffield informed us this morning that tickets "would be valid on Northern Rail, London Midland, Cross Country and Virgin Atlantic" for those needing alternative means of travel...

I love that under the picture of the 150 it just has the word "train"!! Just in case you thought it was an elephant or something! Then again some might argue calling a 150 a train is a bit of a stretch!

What nonsense. Trains from the Peak District didn't run via the Woodhead Valley then so why would they now? The journeys would take longer and customers would revert to road haulage. Yeah thats right lets all vote Woodhead.

It's the shortest route between the two cities and could be the fastest by if reopened.

Agreed, for passenger trains. However, Martinsh argued that freight trains orginating from the Hope Valley should travel that way which made no sense what so ever. Also through passenger services on the Woodhead route finished in the early 1970's so I'm really not sure what his argument is.

When the Woodhead line was still open for freight in the 1970s, when Manchester - Sheffield through trains were diverted over it, the journey time was approximately the same as the Hope Valley line.

No I didn't. At least I didn't mean to. I was referring to its value as a diversionary route in times when the Hope Valley is blocked.

Yep the Woodhead is a tunnel, and its a pass and blow me its also a valley too. Your original post suggested that freight originating in the Hope Valley should travel via the Woodhead route which frankly would be no help to anyone. It would cost a fortune to re-open the Woodhead route for very little gain.

I would be interested to know just how many times Manchester - Sheffield trains were diverted over the Woodhead during the 1970's and how do you define "approximate"?

As for the Hope Valley, improving capacity at Dore would do wonders for capacity on that route, along with the provision of loops. And as much as i love the Midland signal boxes, resignalling the line would be a big help.

He was talking about the TPE services. Fast services where the woodhead was quicker. And also having a second route from sheffield to manchester was useful. with no motorway between the two rail is the fastest option it would be lovely to have two lines now.

Thats a lot of wonga for a diversionary route. I'm sure you'd agree that a derailment is freak accident that could happen anywhere on the network. As I stated earlier boosting capacity on the Hope Valley would be a huge help.

Was he really? The Woodhead route was closed because it was decided that two routes across the Pennines was deemed to be sufficient and I still believe that to be case now. Don't forget that the freight traffic that used the Woodhead route no longer exists. Reinstating the route would cost a fortune and the money would be better spent updating the two remaining routes.

Diversions were regular on Sundays when I was at Sheffield Uni (1977-81). By approximate I mena "I can't be bothered to go and dig out timetables from over 30 years ago to see exactly how they compared" - within 10 minutes anyway.
