I love Cromptons too.

Cool!

I like the look of them, but in particular, I love the distinctive sound of their engines.

I much prefer them in BR blue bearing their TOPS number rather than an older livery with their D number.

I suppose in Blackpool (if that's where you've always been based) you wouldn't have seen many 33s!

For me it has tobe the 25s. Love the sound they make and good little work horses especailly for heritage lines.

DP1 'DELTIC' couldnt be anything else really. although ive found myself taking an unhealthy interest in WR hydrolics.

Without doubt for me class 28 D5705.

An incredible survivor.

Well said, saw this loco at Matlock, maybe 87/88ish? it was inside a shed & its owner (who's name i cant remember) showed me around. It will be a fantastic moment seeing this loco in action again, or should i call it Bo-Co? :)

25 Likewise, they were so common along the Oakham line and then they were gone:( My first detailed hornby loco was a 1977 25 creation which at the time was a landmark change from the chunky 37 and 31s and I have always had a soft spot ever since for them.
My 12 year olds in on the act with the Bachman Tammy castle which runs with my vintage 25 both on DCC so cant wait to see her get a ticket at some point. he is also a member of the class 58 group at Barrow so be nice to see a 58 back on the circuit after all these years

Well, my favourite loco when it was in service was 40118, and seeing as it's preserved I suppose it must be my favourite preserved loco. However, I've only ever caught a glimpse of it from a train passing Tyseley, so if I'm to be allowed a second choice then it's 20031 at the KWVR.

Got quite a few preserved locomotives that I like!!

25059: I visited the KWVR for the first time in May 2011, and was really impressed with their 25. Quite a huge fan of the small Sulzer engines, but the ride behind 25059 was a highlight! Even when I had it on a double header with another 25, and a Class 47, they may as well of been switched off, sounded like 059 was doing all the work!!

31271: Quite a beast, really crisp sounding engine, and seems a strong performer too. Plus, it really looks the part in its Trainload construction livery!

33065: Sealion from the Spa Valley, memories of travelling behind it at the Spa Valley!

37254: Another loco from the Spa Valley, its always a good day out, if a ride behind 254 is involved! The gradients, and thrashy drivers on the Spa Valley, make it a wonderful experience!

It's interesting to read the choices here.

In the late 1970s/early 80s, if you asked anyone what diesels they favoured, both in service and for preservation, I think 37s and 47s would have come near rock bottom of the list, while all the rage would have been for Westerns, Deltics and other diesels facing the scrapman.

No doubt if you went back 20 years earlier and asked what steam locos people favoured to save, I am sure BR standard steam locos would also have got short shrift - yet look how many now thrive on preserved lines.

Therefore there is evidently a lot of affinity towards the locos you grow up with/see in active service.

Despite the user name, I am quite eclectic when it comes to "likes" - don't really have a particular favourite but any hydraulic (especially Hymeks), or Sulzer of class 33 or below in size hits the spot for me.

PS: Quite rate 37905/6 as well.

PPS: Would also go for 56s, but they are a waste of time on preserved railways IMO, out on the mainline with a couple of thousand tons on the drawbar is the way to go

Any 37/4 (esp. the one being repained into RR at the Pontypool & Blaenavon)
37906 - a treat at last October's SVR diesel gala
Westerns Courier and Champion - looking great at (see above) and Tyseley
50044 and 049 - amazing on the main line and looking great on the SVR in Large Logo
56101 - another Large Logo favourite
89001 - just for being unique I guess.
D1755 - when 5043 steamed out of Bham NS last year I sprinted down the platform like a nutter just to get photos and video of the engine ticking before the tour left :D
Any Deltic.
Any Hymek.

I love 50s, especially the final months of the Laira Trio (50007/50033/50050). It might be controversial, but I would love one day for 50007 to be painted back into BR Blue & named Hercules.
