Just tried Lancaster too and they said it's in the system for reservations but they're not available which means not released yet or full. I presume not released yet for now.

Just got these from Ulverston. Clerk was very surprised you could reserve.

I wonder of I managed it this time because Ulverston is a Northern station.
Do they look right;

I can't see a 15:07 departure from Appleby on February 15th on the Northern booking engine: There's a train that departs Appleby and arrives Skipton ten minutes earlier than the communicated times, as reservations are available on that one and not on the preceding, faster, 14:47 southbound departure I'm assuming that's the one.

Cheds got tickets at carlisle station with reservations.
The ticket office got several error messages prior to it working, so persist!
The office couldn't find availability for the rovers for these trains, but railcard discounts were no problem.
Thanks carlisle.

Also, the train times have changed from those published on settle carlisle website. Only by about ten minutes,, but be aware for any connections.

I went to my local station to reserve a seat on board but was told that because it's a Northern service you can't reserve seats. Does anyone have any idea how it will work, because if it's a free for all it'll be standing room only!

No standing room

I believe the Settle-Carlisle Rover *is* valid (should just be a walk-up ticket), which might mean getting reservations only from the booking office.

I have just been back to my local station (Virgin) and had a bit of a determined discussion with the ticket people. I already had off peak tickets for the service so just needed reservations. When I told hem I had SEEN reservations booked at Ulverston they grumpily said they would try but it wouldn't work. Now happy owner of two reserved seats on 10.44 ex Skipton on 14th and return reservations on 14.57 ex Appleby. Assume they are good to go. Good luck people.

Didn't work last night but was just able to successfully book tickets and reservations on the Northern Rail website at the first time of asking :) so I guess that might be the best way of going about it? See you on the 15th, Tornado!

Just bought my tickets with associated reservations. Wonderful that my Dales Railcard discount applies :)

Having issues getting a reservation for this. Also, will the dayrover be valid? Help appreciated

Settle Carlisle Day ranger is valid. I just bought an off-peak return online through the Northern website which came with reservations (slightly more expensive than the day ranger option but ensured I got a reservation). Any ticket office should be able to issue you with a reservation if you're using the rover.

My perambulations this lunchtime have revealed to me that reservations can be made at Virgin Trains managed stations, but not at Chiltern ones, upon whose system the trains reportedly do not yet show up.

Throigh ticketing is now available to and from Appleby to London.

It's a shame they haven't provided any onward bus connections in combination with the steam train though. I looked at the 18.46 arrival but the next bus to Carlisle isn't until after 8pm.

I guess one could spend time in Appleby. Perhaps din there.

Looking at Carlisle south, it kept wanting to be me on the 14.47 rather than the 14.57 and whatever I did, it didn't work. Saying that splitting at Appleby is cheaper when heading to Carsile via Leeds.

Realistically, how are they going to enforce reservations on this train?

I'm going to get a Settle and Carlisle Day Ranger for this, could I get seat reservations using this?

Through the use of seat numbers, the same as any other reservable train service or railtour.

Yes, seat reservations can be made free of charge at any ticket office independent of a ticket purchase (assuming that the trains have been loaded into the system as I mentioned above). I got asked to also present the ticket I would be using when making my reservations, so it might be useful for you to have it with you at the time you make the reservation.

Standing is not permitted on these trains, so as long as you have a seat reservation you should have no problem reaching your seat. It looks like passengers without a reservation will only be permitted to board if there are unreserved seats remaining (unlikely). See the Settle - Carlisle Railway website:
http://www.settle-carlisle.co.uk/tickets-on-sale-for-tornado-hauled-services/
Demand is expected to be extremely high and customers are strongly advised that only those with a seat reservation will be assured of a seat. Walk-up tickets (ie, those without seat reservations) do not guarantee a place on the train. There will be no standing permitted on these services.

They've said no standing room so provided you manage to get a seat reservation it shouldn't feel rammed.
They may have an unreserved section for unsuspecting passengers just wanting to go to Settle etc.

From the same page:
The steam trains will form part of the revised timetabled service and tickets will be available from the usual retail channels. For the best price, and to book a seat, visit www.northernrailway.co.uk or go to any railway booking office. The usual ticket prices will apply and passengers will be able to use railcards such as the Dales Railcard, Senior and other national railcards to obtain a discount. The S&C Day Ranger is also available.

For further information, contact Northern, the train operator, on 0800 200 6060. Please note this is not a booking service.
If you're referring to seating plans, then I don't think there is one. You take the seat that you are allotted.

As I note above, and Blind Traveller seems to confirm, it does currently seem like a bit of a postcode lottery as to which ticket offices tickets can be booked or seats reserved from. The Northern Rail site does provide reservations on these trains with ticket bookings, for those who haven't already purchased tickets in advance.

Okay, so a sort of briefing was posted on the Northern internal news page thing, about 10am today, without an email being sent out (at all), so some staff might not be aware of what is going on still. I did specifically ask if it could be sent out by email so everyone knows what is happening, but apparently because I know where all the information is it doesn't need an email (no, I don't get it either).

There will be seven (7) coaches. Four (4) are reservable, three (3) are not. As far as I can see, passengers, including staff, are required to have in their possession a public rate ticket in order to obtain a reservation for the services. It is to be treated as a regular service and thus all tickets that would be valid on a normal Northern service are valid on these services. There will be no standing passengers permitted on the trains. Free staff travel is permitted on the service but staff are requested to give up their seat if a fare paying passenger requires it. Priv rate is allowed.

Things I can't answer even after the brief :-

Can you get a reservation with a priv rate ticket?
What happens if someone boards on route and I am requested to give up my seat?
Can I get a refund if the train is full and I cannot board?
What happens if I want to board at a midway station and there are no seats left?

Thanks for confirming this, I was curious if normal rules regarding staff travel would apply - I was assuming that they would.

Yes. I had no bother picking up reservations with my staff pass at lunchtime, so priv rate tickets should be the same.

If you have a seat reservation then presumably you cannot possibly be asked to give up your seat, as you hold the only valid reservation for it. Rail staff giving up their seats presumably only applies to the unreserved portion of the train, under which scenario I have no idea.

Conjecturally, that seems like a high proportion of unreserved coaches, given that, if reservations are being allocated sequentially down the train from Coach A Seat 01 as per robbeale's post, they had already filled by 12:30pm today two and a half of the reserved carriages for the 10:44 Skipton - Appleby and 14:57 return on the 15th. No idea how bookings for the other trains might be going, or if this is indeed the method they are the following.
