Great news, certainly look the part from the outside.

Obviously one route has to be first, but are there any specific technical or strategic reasons why Edinburgh/Aberdeen is the first route to be worked by them?

Edinburgh and Aberdeen crews were trained first. Simple as that. Had to start somewhere! No particular reason.

Looks pretty quick off the blocks here!

New doors a bit clunky and ugly. Looks good otherwise though.

Even from the limited impression from the video, the interior looks a world apart from GW standard class. I'm impressed!

Don’t suppose there are any pictures of the fitted interior going about? The CGIs look good but would be interesting to see how the final product compares!
There's a couple knocking about internally but there's little point in posting as they don't really do justice to the enhanced quality offered by the project. Now that the first refurbished set is up here now, the marketing team will be having a field day anytime soon.

I managed to catch a glimpse of the interior while it passed through Waverley. I must admit, they've done an absolutely fantastic job. The standard class seats look fine and roughly equivalent to other HST offerings but I would argue that the first class interior is a clear step above LNER's, for example. The presence of a shop (and a guard's "office") is a great idea and something I always used to think was a good idea when I saw them on the few ex-Hull (I think?) 170s that had the shop areas but were never used.

Absolutely - and rightly so, this is a significant step-change for Scotrail and one which I really hope works, in the long-term. (Incidentally, I was disappointed to see Scotrail twitter posts about this attracting such negativity, already - the perils of social media, I guess)

Do we know when we expect it to enter service? How much more training is required? I assume some training related to the doors for both drivers and guards?

Indeed re social media, and certain sections of the Scottish press. As mentioned earlier here there are various significant PR and party-political perils very likely to occur if the HST service intro falters, even a little bit. Personally I'd rather see a measured and thoughtful intro of the HST - certainly ensuring as close to 100% reliability and punctuality as possible in the early stages, instead of an unnecessarily rushed intro that provides and opportunity for exploitation by some for other means. There's no real expectation from the public of anything much changing because most people don't know what an HST is, and we've had the 170s etc for so long that it's all just "normal". From what I've observed in everyday life no-one is really expecting anything, therefore it's best to take it slow and get it right - imho.

Thanks, yes of course it had to start somewhere, just wondered why.

Actually it was reported in RAIL there was a reason why the Edinburgh to Aberdeen route was chosen; the reasoning was that as the East Coast HSTs were commonly used on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen line already, it would make sense to introduce the ScotRail sets on that line first. They are used on the HML as well obviously but not on the Ladybank to Perth section; the Aberdeen line was worked on its entire length by HSTs before the ScotRail sets started coming north so it would make sense to start using them on that line first if East Coast drivers helped with initial driver training (not sure if that happened or not).

Good to see these sets starting to arrive. From what's been written, I'm assuming that these sets are being serviced at Haymarket. Two questions! One - will this be the home depot for the whole fleet, with other depots (such as Inverness) limited to refuelling duties? And second, why Haymarket rather than Craigentinny (where HST expertise already exists) - is consolidation by operator better than by type of stock?

Because Craigentinny will be fully occupied with Azumas, and Haymarket is losing workload as 170s and 158s are cast off to England. An earlier post said that some technicians have moved over to bring their expertise.

Presumably there will be a press event within the next few days. As a previous poster has said, the crucial question is when Wabtec expect to deliver further sets. This set will presumably be used for final training of the guards and technicians on the doors and any other mods from the unrefurbished sets they have been using until now.

Thank you! (Sorry, I missed the earlier post.) Good news about the staff transfer.

So are the HSTs coming with some kind of shop/buffet counter onboard?

Looked like it. In the rear carriage (first class), the portion nearest to the other standard class carriages had what looked like a shop, with a counter and shelves, joining on to a guard/conductor's "office", next to the start of first class. It's similar to the HST LNER buffet car arrangement, but with a smaller shop/staff area.

Excellent! Always felt like Scotrail needed something like this compared to just a trolley.

It ought to be quicker moving off from station stops as it's only 4 or 5 coaches instead of the usual 7, 9 coaches that you see ;)

Living in GWR land I know exactly what you mean!

According to BBC Scotland “Each train also has a new cafe area on board in addition to the usual trolley service.”

So 2 catering staff per 4 or 5 coach train? Sounds a bit resource heavy!

To be fair, having a static catering area doesn't have to take up loads of space; the GWR micro-buffets for example (401xx / coach 'F' vehicles) probably on result in the loss about 8 seats.
