The 450/5s are meant to end up with the same seating layout as the standard units after refurbishment according to the franchise agreement, so seats will need adding back in. I expect that is why none of them have had any work done so far.

450013 can be added to the list with partly refurbished interiors too.

Hate to be a moaning Minnie, but tried the new 1st class on 450 today. Don't like the leather - constantly slipping forward and too hard. Will probably save my money going forward.

The head of guards emailed all his staff with a breakdown of how things were going in terms of new stock, refurbishing the Desiros and the reintroduction of the 442s.

I've noticed that on some 450s there are now plug sockets. There use to be pug sockets on a few but it's expanding is my impression.

If it is expanding then I'm sure the above point has been mentioned on here.

However has anyone mentioned the fact that on top of the plug dockets is a message about it being for laptop battery charging only. In this day and age of smartphones that seems silly. I've not seen similar wording on other trains being to other franchises.

What’s probably happened is they had a job lot of “laptop charger only” stickers produced around fifteen years ago.

I saw someone charging an electric scooter using a cleaners plug socket, and yet they still argued the toss when the guard explained about variable voltages.

The bits of wood look a bit tacky couldn’t they have made some “plastic shims” lol

It's some sort of soft insulation, not wood. But yes, looks cheap.
I guess it doesn't matter how it looks as long as it actually lasts.

I take it given the 455s and 456s will eventually go, no chance of them ever having WiFi.

You never know, Porterbrook might fix a jet turbine to the side of the unit and call it a quad mode. The phrase flogging a dead horse comes to mind.

The new sockets seem very much at the height where any children travelling will want to play with them.

But (possibly showing my ignorance of basic electrical theory here) am I right in thinking that, whereas just poking something metal into the 'live' side of the socket at home will give you a shock, because it's live with respect to earth, on the train this isn't the case, and you'd have to touch both 'live' and 'neutral' together to get a shock?

Not a railway electrics expert, but I'd assume that neutral of the socket is connected to the train's earth. So touching live and any exposed metal (e.g. the socket casing) would be dangerous.

Poking something into the live hole will meet a shutter which is moved when a pin enters the earth hole. Jabbing something into the live (or neutral) holes will not make an electrical connection.
The BS1363 plug and socket is one of the safest out there.

(Still not a good idea to test this)

Oh yes, I realise that, but when these sockets get increasingly worn and gunged up over time, that shutter will start to stick open here and there...

They're at the same height as in the 1st Class area and in the 1st Class area converted to standard in the 450/5s as were (the sockets were retained). I wasn't aware of any safety issues with them then, so don't see why there should be any issues now.

444040 Appears to have finally broken cover at last, although unlike a caterpillar turning into a butterfly nothing appears to have been changed on it's exterior! I wonder if they will receive the revised version of the SWR livery as per the recent returning 159s or if First Group takes the easier way out and just sticks to Vinyls.

The big question is whether the interior has been done or whether it's just moved outside for a bit of fresh air!

Did anyone expect the livery to change? I didn’t to be honest, although that time in the sheds haven’t done the unit any good. It looks grubby, especially between carriages.

Is that yellow line the length of the train at platfom level new or am I forgetting something? If new, I guess it could be a platfom gap emphasis.
