Did it spot aircraft and/or intercept radio messages, but these reports were ignored when passed up the chain at Pearl Harbour?

It was more direct that that - I am sure it fired shots at a Japanese target - if not an aircraft then maybe a warship infringing US waters?

That's near enough. The USS Ward actually fired on and sank a Japanese two-man midget submarine which was attempting to get through the antisubmarine netting. The two Japanese sailors were the first victims of American action, a day before the declaration of war.

Your turn...

It's an acoustic listening device (sound-wave equivalent of Radar) for early warning of approaching aircraft. They were in vogue during the inter-war years as I recall, and Pathé newsreels covered them a few times (in order to reassure citizens and distract enemies from the secret radar research).

I believe they were installed in numerous locations along the English coast, predominantly in the south and east. Assuming the the pictured one is a rare modern survivor, I'll take a wild guess at Sussex? (My knowledge of English counties is nothing to write home about.)

Absolutely right as to what it is. Not Sussex, though.

I'd suspect Essex?

or Essex

That's the one. Specifically Kilnsea, which is the last place you pass through going towards Spurn Head (the long spiky bit which sticks out into the north side of the Humber estuary). Good place to listen for aircraft approaching over the North Sea, I guess.

Your floor.

I think krus_aragon should take it for getting the first part of the answer.
