Here's some descriptions of events that happened on this day - but in which year did they happen?
1. British forces capture St Lucia in the West Indies from the French 1778
2. The outlaw Ned Kelly was hanged outside Melbourne Gaol 1880
3. Willys-Overland launched the Jeep 1940
4. The first video recorder was demonstrated in Beverley Hills, California 1952
5. Demi Moore was born 1962
6. Leonardo DiCaprio was born 1974
Over to you!
I vaguely recall something about this. Shot down a Japanese aircraft which was thought to be attacking the ship?
Did it spot aircraft and/or intercept radio messages, but these reports were ignored when passed up the chain at Pearl Harbour?
It was more direct that that - I am sure it fired shots at a Japanese target - if not an aircraft then maybe a warship infringing US waters?
It's an acoustic listening device (sound-wave equivalent of Radar) for early warning of approaching aircraft. They were in vogue during the inter-war years as I recall, and Pathé newsreels covered them a few times (in order to reassure citizens and distract enemies from the secret radar research).
I believe they were installed in numerous locations along the English coast, predominantly in the south and east. Assuming the the pictured one is a rare modern survivor, I'll take a wild guess at Sussex? (My knowledge of English counties is nothing to write home about.)
I'd suspect Essex?
Lincolnshire?
East Riding of Yorkshire
That's the one. Specifically Kilnsea, which is the last place you pass through going towards Spurn Head (the long spiky bit which sticks out into the north side of the Humber estuary). Good place to listen for aircraft approaching over the North Sea, I guess.
Your floor.
I came in at the last minute so I’ll say
